Beach District football: Cox beats stubborn Princess Anne; Salem blanks Tallwood; Kempsville wins

#10 Cox 16, Princess Anne 7

Richie Lyons took a fake punt and ran 16 yards on fourth-and-two to set up a D. J. Dinardo 10-yard TD run up the middle helping the Falcons (6-3) protect their home turf in a Beach District contest.

After Kenay Hawks' 7-yard TD tied the game at 7-apiece in the third quarter, the Falcons got much needed help from their special teams and defense.

Drew Jarrett’s punt was downed at the Cavaliers (0-8) 1-yard line. A play later, Brent Butler tackled Xavier Morgan behind the line of scrimmage for a safety and to preserve the Falcon win.

Key stats: C, James Coleman, 12-77 yards rushing, 1 TD; Severen Rucker, 11-69 yards rushing; PA, Kenay Hawks, 15-73 yards rushing, 1 TD; Xavier Morgan, 14-76 yards rushing.

Salem 10, Tallwood 0

Ernest Suggs picked off two passes and Tyshawn Harris rushed for 151 yards as the SunDevils (4-4) stepped into the Division 6 playoff race and handed the Lions a second consecutive shut out loss.

Suggs highlighted a defense that held Tallwood (4-5) to seven rushing yards. He also knocked down a fourth-down pass after the Lions drove inside the 10-yard line in the final period.

Harris scored on a 75-yard run up the middle in the first quarter, and Kyle La Croix kicked a 22-yard field goal in the second quarter.

Key stats: S–Harris 26-151, TD rushing; T–Robert Brown 7-16-3, 105 passing.

Kempsville 22, First Colonial 10

The Chiefs (2-6) dominated the visiting Patriots (2-6), outgaining First Colonial by 217 yards in their Beach District win.

Quarterback Christopher Rodgers and running back Travis Hughes led Kempsville, with Rodgers passing for 108 yards and two touchdowns and Hughes rushing for 90 yards and one touchdown.

Rodgers hit Tim Lewis with a 35-yard touchdown pass to give Kempsville a 7-0 first-quarter lead. On second down on his own 22 yard line, First Colonial quarterback Eli Harold fumbled the snap, which running back Chris Smith recovered in the end zone for a Kempsville safety for 9-0.

Another deep strike from Rodgers, a 47-yarder to Matthew Hill, at 5:06 in the third quarter gave the Chiefs (2-6) the eventual gamewinning points.

Key stats: K—Rodgers 6-14-0-108, 2 TDs passing, 11-32 rushing; Hughes 11-90, TD rushing; Tanner Fiano 4-26 receiving, 2 interceptions. FC—Rashaad Lane 8-68 rushing.
