Calling the Republican presidential candidate out of touch, Sen. Joe Biden asked Virginians on Saturday to "get up and take back the country we love."
"We're competing for every single vote here in the Old Dominion," said Biden, the Democratic vice presidential nominee. "Ladies and gentlemen, we win here and we win the presidency."
Speaking at Suffolk's Nansemond River High School, Biden told a crowd of 900 to 1,000 people that he and Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama would unify the country. Their plan: Restore the middle class and reclaim America's respect in the world.
Accomplishing those goals, Biden said, will require an end to the Iraq war, tax cuts for working people, affordable health care, investment in infrastructure and help for young people hoping to attend college.
Virginia, a battleground state for this election, has not awarded its electoral votes to a Democratic presidential candidate since 1964.
During the roughly 25-minute speech, Biden compared Republican presidential candidate Sen. John
McCain's economic policies with those of President Bush. He also questioned McCain's self-described role as a maverick in Washington.
"You can't call yourself a maverick if all you've been for the last eight years is a sidekick," he said, quoting Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey.
Biden called for McCain and his running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, to end their "lies" about Obama. The attacks are an attempt to divide Americans and distract them from what's "really at stake," Biden said. He described Obama as a man with a "backbone of steel."
"He can take 10 more days of these personal attacks," Biden said, "but our country cannot take four more years."
People lined up as early as 5 a.m. to attend the rally. Suffolk resident Kimberly Parker, one of the first to arrive, said she prefers Obama's plans for education and the economy. Parker, 45, is a government worker.
"And we shop at Wal-Mart. We don't go to Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue," Parker said, referring to reports that the Republican National Committee spent $150,000 to outfit Palin and her family. "We're true soccer moms."
Sporting a red Obama cap and several campaign buttons, Kimberly Summers described herself as a 24-year registered Republican who won't vote for McCain because "he doesn't understand today's times." Summers, 42, owns a body piercing shop.
"Barack Obama doesn't just represent the Democratic Party," she said. "He represents America. He represents me."
After the speech, Summers' teen daughter, Liddy, squeezed her mother's wheelchair through the crowd of people who wanted to shake Biden's hand. He put his arm around Summers and posed for a photo. "Aw, God love him," she said as she emerged with a grin.
She looked at the photo on her camera's screen, recalling what she had told Biden during their brief meeting.
"I said 'Joe, small-business owner from Norfolk. I'm trusting you to end this war.' He said, 'I will.' "

MCCAIN IN 2000 VS 2008
Since his defeat he has become the twin brother of Bush Junior seeking another round of welfare to Wall Street, while middle class folks are still losing money on their pensions that they have worked for their entire live.
McCain said just a couple of months ago that we were going to reward public service, but he clearly changed his mind again. If anyone gets a tax break, it will be our cops and firemen tasked with Homeland Security as Biden has said both before and after becoming the VP pick. They will be the first in line along with our nurses, teachers and our Veterans.
I have no problems with rich folks. Wall Street has been bailed out more than enough. As Powell said during a real Republican Convention, corporate welfare is first in line for elimination.
Sen. McCain should know better, you don't become rich with a career in the military and not everyone marries a rich woman like Mrs. McCain.

Recently My wife and I took a gun safety and concealment class at Bob's gun store. ( we live in Portsmouth and were given no choice other than moving but thats a different story)
In the class they made it extremely clear on the grief one would experience in having a gun on your belt. That was one of the reasons they suggested getting a concealed permit. So the public doesn't have to see your gun. They constantly re-inforced the idea that many people in the public may be uncomfortable around guns. And understandably Police use extreme caution when responding to " a man with a gun call"
Sorry If I made you look like a fool. NOT!
ring442 this is too funny

I remember that post, and I was quoting a previous one, what you did was leave out the quotation marks, like I have around your commnet above. The other factor is, Gertz is a nickname my grandchldren gave me and it's short for Gertrude, so I hate to burst your bubble, but I don't have a wife. DUH!
No thanks joe i'll go by
No thanks joe i'll go by what you told us BEFORE obama picked you as a runningmate.
Oh look, wedge politics . .
Oh look, wedge politics . . .
"Don't blame me that I capitalized on endevours when other people were checking their maibloxes for welface checks."
This poster, apparently a student of the radical rights dirty trick book, has presented us with precisely two choices. Either we are "wealthier than . . .x" or we are waiting at our mailbox for welfare checks. This choice is a joke--simple empty rhetoric. This dirt simple scenario is a prime example of the stupid politics of hate. A textbook example of the long standing policy of the radical right of winning political office by creating and exploiting a house divided. Mark this tactic. Don't be distracted by wedge tangents. Don't be fooled by fear and smear. Don't let them make you hate your neighbors. Demonstrate the kind of real patriotism you can't pin on your lapel. Don't be duped by cowboy impersonations.
What I find truely funny is...
Obama lives in a Million Dollar house, yet he's in touch with the little guy. Just like McCain has 7 homes and he's in touch with the little guy. Biden donated 3 grand to charity but yet is a millionare, but he's in tuoch with the little guy...
Give me a break, NONE OF THEM are in touch with the little guy...
here is the proof gertz
I am not directing a rant towards you. I can read and remember. You are a typical liberal. You can't admit you're wrong and you have no longer have any creditability.

I live in Norfolk, and I don't want to be taxed to pay Chesapeake's 500K due to their own inability to maintain their own bridge.

I'd like to see that comment
"One post you say you live in Portsmouth and one you say Norfolk."
I try to stay away from Portsmouth issues, and once again the republicans are going after non-issues instead of the issues that every American is interested in. I am not the candidate, yet you and other want to attack me the same as you attack Senator's Obama and Biden.
It is that very attack mode that is bring down the republican party.
Good luck with all your rants aimed at me, but why don't you focus on issues?
Think
You want to talk about lies and wardrobe? Let’s talk about the sweet deal Obama got from Rezco on real estate. Let’s talk about Obama and the radical Rev. Wright and Obama’s’ lack of knowledge that he was preaching for 20 years of white American destruction. And since you have people like Lewis Farrakhan (a radical Muslim) saying his people are the ones who are going to lead in “Universal Change” another commrade of Obama’s calling him the missaih. Least not forgot his association with the terriorst Bill Ayers he endorsed his book and not at 8 years old. I know the democrats don’t want to acknowledge any of this but oh my god, Palin bought some clothes which by the way will be donated to charity. You Dems should be pleased, "redistribution of wealth" jsut what Obama is all about.
Welfare
Some posters, in their comments, contend that all Obama supporters are welfare recipients, with no ambition, drive & little or no education. No one can actually be ignorant enough to believe that, can they? Then again, upon reading some comments by those who write that type statement, it is easily understood why 1 could come to such a conclusion. Perhaps all the success & monies some of these posters claim, has gone to their heads to the point they never saw the necessity of basic education. How else could their comments be so frighteningly close to the ramblings of a barely functional illiterate?
