Crash at Monitor-Merrimac tunnel backing up traffic on I-664

The northbound lanes of Interstate 664 were closed twice because of accidents this afternoon,

An earlier crash at the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel happened about 1:30 p.m. and was cleared up before 2 p.m., according to VDOT. Traffic was backed up to the interchange with the Western Freeway, according to the VDOT.

A later accident at 3:10 p.m. closed the northbound tunnel again. A VDOT spokeswoman said wreckers were on the scene and the crash would be cleared soon.
