SUFFOLK

At 15, Jontreil Lamar Baker was a youngster with no criminal record, prosecutor Scott Alleman said in Circuit Court on Thursday.

But at 16, after he got involved with the South Suffolk Gangsters, Baker became a twice-convicted felon, Alleman said. Baker pleaded guilty Thursday to participation in a criminal street gang and larceny of a person. He was originally charged with gang participation, robbery, malicious wounding, conspiracy to commit robbery and use of a firearm in commission of a felony.

As a part of a plea agreement, Baker, who was being treated as an adult, was sentenced to eight years in prison, with all of the time suspended. He has already been in the Western Tidewater Regional Jail for six months and in a juvenile correctional facility before that.

Baker will be on supervised probation for eight years, and he must return to school, Judge Westbrook Parker ruled.

The robbery happened Feb. 20,

near the intersection of Cedar Street and Woodrow Avenue, the boundary of the Gangsters' territory with a rival gang with Bloods affiliations, Alleman said. Baker and four other gang members jumped three boys with the rival gang. In the robbery, Alleman said, they got $9. Baker's share was $2.

As a part of his probation, the judge told Baker that he must stay away from all gangs and gang members.

not a bad kid?????

Please enlighten us and tell us about Baker's good qualities maybe then we will stop judging him. So far his police record does not speak well of "good kid".

Stop Jugding

If you dont him as a person you cant jugde him, you cant go by what the paper says, just because the paper say he is a bad kid everything in paper isn't true if you dont know the facts about the case, and being someone that knows this kid personally he's not a bad kid!!

dennis1

Sorry, my error

Suffolk, Not Portsmouth

Gertz, this debacle is in Suffolk; not P-Town (this time).

Probation facilitates more crime.

Maybe the kid can now go out and kill someone while robbing them. If the penalty for just robbery is probation, murder cannot result in any punishment to be concerned about. There are plenty of examples!!

if you haven't written or called

If you haven't written or called the Portsmouth Council, including the mayor, the court system and the Superintendent of Schols please do so. It's time we start standing up.

Wow

way to combat the gang problem Suffolk. Hopefully when this young man reoffends it won't be your family members who end up on the short of end. Nothin like a smack on the back of a hand to let a teen gang banger whose in charge eyeroll

Un-BULL-ievable

These judges/prosecutors should be held accountable for the future murder this animal will commit. When the city siezes a malicious animal do they turn it lose to do more harm? I understand this is a human(barely), but at least give it some time away.

Ordered back to school?

That's just what the schools need convicted felons (Firearm) ordered to go to school. I can't imagine why we have problems with violence in the schools. I wish they would lokc these "kids" up and not force them to attend school and disrupt the education process.

three strikes you out?

lets see he had 2 felony convictions by 16 ......gang banger...i thought that was automatic life in prison!but no we are going to put him back into his enviroment to commit more violent crimes.who is going to be responsible if he murders someone the DA,the judge.this is a good example of a young adult who needs to spend his life in prison to save a persons life.thanks system for failing us once again.

how will be win?

How will we win in the first against gangs when they are allowed back on the street with a warning to not have an association with other gang members? Like that's supposed to mean somthing. It makes me so angry when our Judges haven't taken gang violence serious. Just what are they thinking? Since this punk has only been given a slap on the wrist, the Judge should had stated that he cannot leave Suffolk city limits. We don't want the punk here in Norfolk.

same same

I agree with the post below. Let's see if that get deleted. Seems that I and many others can't post our thoughts without the liberal front at VP striking them. It is ridiculous to think that the justice system, school system, and local governments want to eradicate these problems. None of these address the REAL problem! A new camera, metal detectors, and slaps on the wrist are NOT and have NEVER been a deterrent to these heathens. Until society gets serious and deals a horrible blow to this mindset the problem will continue to grow! Thank God for our 2nd amendment rights. I know how to administer swift justice if that time should come!

What a Travesty!

I firmly believe that both the judge and the prosecutor that agreed to the suspended sentence for this kid should serve his eight years in jail...when are you liberal thinking people going to ever hold anyone accountable for their actions; and, what kind of message does this send to deter more gang violence?

Just plain stupid!

Giving a plea to a gang member that puts him back onto the street without a conviction for gang participation is just plain stupid. He will return to the same neighborhood, same friends and ultimately the same behavior without having a record of the gang activity, so he gets a second chance at being a criminal. Hes been in juvenile detention and in jail, they are nothing but schools to these young hoods. Just how is the prosecutor going to escape persecution when this young man escalates his violence and claims a life. Prosecutors have to stop playing judge and jury in deciding which crimes to prosecute. They need to prosecute all of the criminal activity and once they are found guilty allow either the jury or the judge to determine their sentence. Sure it will cost more money at first, but after everyone knows they will be going to jail or being put to death for their actions they will certainly straighten up and fly right.

WHAT?????

TWICE a convicted...that's right...CONVICTED felon. Doesn't matter what AGE he was. We WILL be reading his name in the news again. And probably soon too.

Eight years of SUPERVISED probabtion??? What's that mean...he has to call once a week???

He should be sitting in prison with all the other "gangster wannabes".
