Drake questions Nye's role in Macedonia hostage rescue

NORFOLK

On Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Thelma Drake surrounded herself with veterans, blasted a TV ad paid for by a union group and took a couple shots at her opponent, Glenn Nye.

On Friday, Nye, a Democrat, assembled his own group of veterans and accused Drake of attacking him personally instead of focusing on issues.

Their exchange is the latest in an increasingly heated race for the 2nd District, as the candidates try to appeal to voters in the military-heavy region.

At a news conference Wednesday, Drake floated questions about Nye's role in helping rescue a hostage in Macedonia in 2001 when he was a foreign service officer. Nye references the event on TV commercials and in campaign literature.

Drake said she wondered how a "junior member of the state department" could be involved in a hostage rescue and said she hadn't been able to find any news stories or documents about Nye's claims.

Nye said Drake's comments were the latest in "a pattern of personal attacks." He cited Drake's claim at their second debate that he illegally benefited from a tax deduction on a house he co-owns with his brother. A D.C. official later said there was no wrongdoing.

Nye passed out news stories and State Department documents about the hostage rescue. He helped locate the American and through local political contacts pressured insurgents to release him, the documents said.

The application for Nye's Superior Honor Award called his efforts "essential to securing the release of an American citizen held by the NLA (National Liberation Army)."

A statement from the Drake campaign included, "Thelma Drake talks to voters about issues that matter every single day. She's proud of her record and agenda for the future."

But it is irrelevant . . .

Everyone (D's anyway) tells me that it doesn't make any difference to John McCain's resume that he was a POW in Vietnam. Same logic: It doesn't matter that Thelma did not serve in the military and Glenn Fry did. It's all irrelevant, by the standard in which we make military service a neutral value. Cheers, MGM

Caspar is wrong about who is the crybaby

Honestly, Thelma Drake is the complaining crybaby. If she was a real politician, who had honor and class, she wouldn't complain about her opponent's record and work on her own.

Thelma Drake needs to get a clue

How much time did Thelma Drake ever spend in a volatile situation that could have cost her, her own life? Maybe in the real estate business now she would be taking her life in her own hands. She has some nerve criticizing anyone that did go overseas and did the duty that they were called upon by the government to support our citizens (civilian or military). She likes to tell people how she supports the veterans, but where did she initially stand when concurrent receipt came up. She should have been in the forefront getting a civil war law changed to change the injustice that is now being done to veterans that did stay until retirement and became disabled but are punished because they did do their 20. The presidency is now the only change that is needed in the direction that our country has been led and I believe that we need a change in the direction that our supposed representative needs to meet the ne

Drake

Let's not forget that she pushed for Pat Robertson's 64 Interchange to Nowhere, Evan as the city said that wasn't in their list of priorities for solving the city's traffic problems.

Another Crybaby Running for Office

What are Glen Nye's qualifications to be a congressman, other than he was in the State Department and supposedly rescued a hostage? Sounds like he'd make a better security consultant or soldier than a legislator. Then when he's pressed about his qualification, he starts complaining. Well, there's one thing evident, he's qualified to be a Democrat, because he's a big crybaby.

thelma's role?

Maybe Thelma can explain her role in voting against our troops.

Hey ma

I walk the streets here with no body armor and people get killed here too. Am I a liar? Think not! Were you there when she took the walk(s) she talked about? Think not! The facts, please ma, just the facts. And to Thelma, keep fighting the pork and tell it as you see it.

wow, a new low

I never thought Thelma Drake could go lower, but she just did. Honestly, for every comment like that she makes from now until November, I will donate 25$ to Glenn's Campaign.

It seems although Glenn may be trailing Thelma Drake he is taking the higher road and not taking pot shots at his candidate. Maybe Thelma could take a leaf out of his book

Drake Lied

Drake lied when she said she could walk the streets of Baghdad without protectvie armor and stay in its hotels. How could she live with herself making such a statement when our men and women were and still are getting killed in Iraq?

No High School Diploma

No high school diploma for Thelma. Oops, making babies when still in high school does have consequences. No wonder she loves Sarah Barracuda--same family values. Does she harbor resentment towards people who actually excel in their education and accomplish incredible feats while still in their twenties? Thelma, you're done--how's the real estate business lookin for ya?
