Eastern Region Golf Tournament

Where: Ford’s Colony, Williamsburg

When: Monday and Tuesday, 10:30 a.m.

At Stake: Two teams and six individuals will move on to the state tournament, which will be held Oct. 20-21 at Independence Golf Club in Midlothian. Last year, Cox’s Brinson Paolini was the Eastern Region medalist and the Falcons won the team title.

Outlook: After defending its regular season conference title with a victory at the Beach District tournament, Kellam appears to be the team to beat. With senior Wade Wawner and Alex Lloyd forming a powerful one-two punch, the Knights regularly shoot below 300.

Cox and Southeastern District champion Hickory will pose a threat at Ford’s Colony, a course featuring tight fairways. “If we keep the ball in play, we’ll do real well,” Kellam coach Jason Copeland said.

Both the Falcons and Hawks are led by golfers who will be in contention for the individual title. Hickory’s John Dawson and Cox’s Paolini are consistent ball strikers. But Wawner, who was the co-medalist with Paolini at the Beach District tournament, is also in the mix along with Lloyd, Hickory’s Jesse Dillon, Lakeland’s Ben Hunter and Grassfield’s James Fanshaw.
