RICHMOND
Elizabeth Edwards calls Republican presidential candidate John McCain's health care plan a "perfect storm" for working families.
Edwards spoke out against McCain's plan to deregulate the insurance industry and give families a tax break to pay for care at an event Tuesday at the Virginia Capitol. She says the plan would backfire, resulting in lost care for more than 580,000 Virginians.
Edwards spoke as senior fellow of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, so she was careful not to endorse Democrat Barack Obama's plan for universal health care.
Edwards has incurable breast cancer. She only recently began to speak publicly following the revelation this summer that her husband, former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, had an extramarital affair.

beauty doesn't bother me
But Sarah Palin does. All we hear is attack, attack, attack, and no substance on anything. Mary, I have the deepest respect for your opinions, but when it comes to Palin I have to strongly disagree. I see her as shallow with a tremendous lack of knowledge to even be a VP candidate choice. Winks, grins, folksy, almost hillbilly like comments, don't impress me at all, and I actually find it to be juvenile.
The attack mode coming from the McCain/Palin camp will damage their chances of winning this election. Karl Rove, has got to be running their campaign, because we have seen this kind of "attack mode" before. It's very disturbing!

You say it all when you call the search for a vice-presidential candidate a "beauty contest." No one ever does that (*even* when pretty-boy John Edwards is involved) unless they are looking past the content of one's character and knowledge base and focusing on looks alone. I am sorry Sarah Palin's beauty bothers you but I think the woman's fine mind and knowledge base is being shown more and more for what it is as the campaign goes on. Cheers, MGM
Lesser Woman?
McCain/Edwards First Wives club: What happened to John McCain's first wife? Crippled and disfigured by an automobile accident, John McCain trashed his marital vows, divorced his first wife, and barely one month later in a lavish, high society wedding, married Cindy McCain, 20 years his junior. And this from a man of honor? Can John McCain be excused from this act of abandonment because he is a "great man" and because his wife, thanks to the accident was a "lesser woman"? Why did the vice presidential beauty contest between Kay Bailey Hutchison, Jane Swift, and a host of other qualified Republican women, end up with Sarah Palin as winner? Could it be John McCain at 72 is still the same man he was when he abandoned his first wife almost 30 years ago? That when it comes to judging women, the things that matter most are youth and beauty? Elizabeth Edwards is not a “lesser woman”, and John McCain is not a “great man”. Elizabeth Edwards will not be silenced by hypocrites like John McCain
RE: Health care
"Health care is not a government hand out. anyone can get treatment anytime and any Hospital Emergency Room. you might have to wait but you will be seen and treated."
A few monthws ago I was at DePaul emergency. It was about 10 pm when we went back into the treatment area, and a little after midnight when we were leaving. When we stepped back into the waiting room, it was very crowded, and NOT ONE person spoke english.
I beleive we are all in this together, I don't believe in spending billions bombing the heck out of a county then turn around and spend billions more to re-build that same country when we could be helping our own here at home. Having said that, send the 12 million illegal immigrants back to where they came from, and stop giving them FREE HC.
Health Care
Health care is not a government hand out. anyone can get treatment anytime and any Hospital Emergency Room. you might have to wait but you will be seen and treated. I for one do not see health care as a hand out. It is up to you to provide any heath care not the Government. I guess since I work I would have to pay for those that don't. I am so sick of helping those whom will not help themselves... I hate to say this but Get a Job and stop sucking at the gov't breast...
oops!
soccer..... Where did I put those bifocals?

Well gosh darn it, wink, grin that sounds like a plan to me. Hey, maybe she could run for VP oh, she hasn't been a mayor or governor yet. I'm sure all the Joe six-packs and socker moms would vote for her, not to mention the cancer survirors. I'm liking this better all the time. Think I need to email Mrs. Edwards.
Healthcare is an individuals
Healthcare is an individuals responsibility to obtain not a free handout from the government. Get a clue! GIMME GIMME GIMME Mr. Obama. What a crock!
Ill take that 5000 credit for my insurance with open arms along with the economic stimulus check. If Obama gets elected that economic stimulus check will be the first thing to get cut. Take it to the bank!
Agreed
Clewis, you're exactly right. I hope that while she is critizing McCain's plan, she is also as adamant that Obama's plan is not the answer either!! When the public spends their valuable time in support of Mrs. Edwards, she returns the favor by being honest about BOTH choices. If she is not able to do this, what real service has she offered?
Obama's and McCain's health care plans
I think Obama's health care plan makes much more sense than McCain's, because Obama's plan is based on offering more choices. Under Obama's plan, if you want to keep your current coverage, there is no problem. But he would lower prices of your current coverage by allowing importing safe drugs from abroad, take on the drug company lobby that has blocked lower prices for generic drugs, and he would regulate practices of insurance companies that drive up prices. At the same time, he would establish new alternatives for people and small businesses that have trouble getting coverage. This would be like the federal plan that offers federal employees (including members of Congress) their choice of a variety of plans that meet certain standards. Offering choices is good. With all these choices, Obama's plan makes sense.
It looks like McCain's plan would demolish our whole system, by getting rid of the current tax deductions for employer-supplied coverage. Without the tax break, employers will stop offering coverage, or they will make employees pay more to make up for the employer's loss of tax breaks. For anyone who gets their coverage from employers, this is taking a huge ris
Healthcare
I don't agree with socialized medicine and gov't sponsored healthcare, however, I do believe that Elizabeth and John Edwards speak for a segment is our society that is largely ignored and it's good that her voice is being heard. I don't think her husband's infedelity has anything to do with the issues at hand. I just don't believe that taxpayers should have to shoulder the burden of healthcare for someone who dosen't contribute.
You're kidding, right?
I can feel sorry for her without her opening her mouth. In fact, I perfer it!! Just because folks know she's been through/going through a lot doesn't mean anything she says will make a lick of sense when it comes to what she thinks she knows about McCain's health plan! Why don't you people get that??!
Where is her cheating husband?
I like her, she has been through a lot. Cannot stand her husband, the low-life, $500.00 haircut man. Elizabeth you deserve so much better in a man.
Good grief
Mrs. Edwards should spend more time worrying about Obama's dumb idea to make healthcare a government-run business!!
Gertz Point
I agree maybe she should run for community organizer then in a couple of weeks the senate then in about 184 days the presidency.
You go girl!
I plan to be in Richmond that day, and hope I will be able to attend this event. A number of us are hoping Mrs Edwards will advance into running for public office herself. Give em hell and God bless!
I wonder
if she will also point out the similarities between her looser husband and obama: greedy trial lawyers, no experience in executive management, virtually no military experience. Her time would be better spent talking to infidelity support groups.
