Ex-sailor fined in Pa. for Navy marriage scheme

PITTSBURGH

A former Navy sailor will repay about $18,000 in fraudulent housing allowances he collected and serve three years' probation imposed by a federal judge in Pittsburgh in a marriage fraud scheme.

Twenty-four-year-old Jason Leichliter, of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, pleaded guilty in June and was sentenced Monday. He was one of 16 sailors charged by federal prosecutors in Virginia who have pleaded guilty in the scheme involving sailors aboard two ships there. His case was transferred because he lives in Pennsylvania.

Leichliter admitted marrying a woman from Belarus with an expired student visa and falsely claiming he lived in her New York apartment so he could collect more than $18,000 in Navy housing allowances.

The judge noted Leichliter is still married to the woman who was sentenced in the scheme last week.
