Football: Preview of Friday's other games

Jami Frankenberry and Larry Rubama look at Friday’s other games, which begin at 7 p.m. at the home school unless otherwise noted.

No. 7 Indian River vs. No. 8 Great Bridge

Site Colon L. Hall Stadium (behind Great Bridge Middle School)

Records Indian River 3-2 overall, 3-1 Southeastern District, Great Bridge 4-1, 3-1.

Key facts This is a key Southeastern District match-up between Division 5 teams. Indian River has emerged from a rugged early schedule — losses to Lake Taylor and Oscar Smith — to win back-to-back games. QB Frankie Hamrock has thrown for 441 yards and eight TDs in those two victories. Great Bridge QB Brad Hudson returned last week from a knee injury. RB Trey Bray (concussion) will miss his second consecutive game.

Jami says Indian River, 27-20.

Larry says Indian River, 35-27.

No. 3 Green Run at Bayside

Records Green Run 5-0 overall and Beach District, Bayside 1-4.

Key facts Green Run remains atop the Beach District with Ocean Lakes, which plays Kellam today. The Stallions are averaging 289.8 yards per game on offense and lead the Beach District in total defense. RB Dejor Simmons rushed for 160 yards and three touchdowns last Friday. Bayside has lost four consecutive games — three of them by a total of seven points. WR Mike Satterwhite is among the Beach District leaders in receptions with 17.

Jami says Green Run, 31-13.

Larry says Green Run, 27-13.

No. 9 Norcom at Churchland

Records Norcom 4-1, 1-1 Eastern District; Churchland 2-3, 1-1.

Key facts Norcom rode an emotional roller-coaster last week, losing to Maury a day after the death of WR Rashawn Finney. Last week’s loss dropped the Greyhounds a game behind Maury and Lake Taylor in the Eastern District standings, and into a tie with Booker T. Washington, Churchland and Norview. Churchland has followed each loss this season with a victory and was defeated by Lake Taylor 33-10 last week.

Jami says Norcom, 14-13.

Larry says Norcom, 34-20.

No. 10 Grassfield at Hickory

Records Grassfield 4-1, 3-1 Southeastern District; Hickory 0-5, 0-4.

Key facts Grassfield opened 4-0 before losing 37-0 to Oscar Smith last week. The Grizzlies surrendered just 27 points in their first four games. Hickory’s closest game came last week in a 14-7 loss to Great Bridge. The Hawks have lost nine consecutive games going back into last season.

Jami says Grassfield, 20-7.

Larry says Grassfield, 28-14.

Tallwood at Kempsville

Records Tallwood 4-2 overall and Beach District, Kempsville 0-5.

Key facts Tallwood has won its past three games, all without scoring more than a touchdown. The Lions have given up just eight total points during that stretch. Kempsville scored a season-high 21 points in last week’s loss to Kellam. WR Tanner Fiano is tied for the Beach District lead in receptions with 17.

Jami says Tallwood 20-7.

Larry says Tallwood, 20-6.

Cox at First Colonial

Records Cox 3-3 overall and Beach District, First Colonial 2-3.

Key facts Cox has lost back-to-back games by a touchdown after starting the season 3-1. First Colonial RB Chris Smith has rushed for 159 yards in the past two games – both Patriots victories.

Jami says Cox, 17-10.

Larry says Cox, 20-17.

Lakeland at King’s Fork

Records Lakeland 1-4, 1-3 Southeastern District; King’s Fork 3-2, 2-2.

Key facts These Suffolk rivals hook up for a Southeastern District game. Lakeland QB Neil McKoy has thrown for 593 yards and six TDs. WR Mike Mason has 10 catches in the past three games for King’s Fork, which is aiming for its third consecutive victory.

Jami says Lakeland, 20-19.

Larry says King’s Fork, 23-20.

Princess Anne at Landstown

Records Princess Anne 0-6 overall and Beach District; Landstown 2-3.

Key facts Landstown, coming off its bye week, has lost back-to-back games. RB Sterlin Phifer, who has committed to Boston College, is nursing a sprained thumb and missed a loss to First Colonial two weeks ago. Coach Tommy Reamon declined to say whether Phifer would play tonight. Princess Anne RBs Kenay Hawks and Xavier Morgan totaled 169 rushing yards in a 17-12 loss to First Colonial.

Jami says Landstown 24-13.

Larry says Landstown, 28-13.

Deep Creek at Nansemond River

Records Deep Creek 0-5, 0-4 Southeastern District; Nansemond River 1-4, 0-4.

Key facts Deep Creek hopes to avoid its first 0-6 start since 1976. Hornets RB Charles Arnold rushed for 102 yards last Friday. Nansemond River RB Lamont Brown has 218 yards in his past three games, but the Warriors have committed seven turnovers in the past two — both losses.

Jami says Deep Creek, 22-12.

Larry says Deep Creek, 20-14.

B.T. Washington at Norview

Records Booker T. Washington 1-4, 1-1 Eastern District; Norview 3-2, 2-1.

Key facts These Norfolk rivals are two of four district teams with one loss. Booker T. Washington got a boost — and its first victory — with the help of QB Desmond Lee’s return last week. He originally decided not to play football this season but reconsidered and threw for 148 yards and a TD. Norview WR Marcus Hall remains atop South Hampton Roads’ receiving list with 32 receptions — 10 more than any other area Group AAA player. Hall has seven TDs.

Jami says Norview, 28-13.

Larry says Norview, 27-20.

Wilson vs. Granby

Records Wilson 0-5, 0-2 Eastern District; Granby 0-5, 0-2.

Key facts Wilson aims for its first on-field victory since Nov. 11, 2004; the Presidents had a forfeit victory last season. Granby owns a four-game winning streak against Wilson, including 28-13 last season.

Jami says Granby, 22-12.

Larry says Granby, 20-13.

Nansemond.-Suffolk at Kettle Run

Records Nansemond-Suffolk Academy 2-3, Kettle Run High School 0-5.

Key facts Nansemond-Suffolk Academy averaged 169.8 rushing yards per game before gaining just 58 in last week’s loss to Atlantic Shores. Kettle Run is a first-year Group AA high school located in Nokesville, Va., that is playing an independent schedule this year.

Greenbrier at Hampton Rds Acad.

Records Greenbrier Christian 0-5, 0-1 Tidewater Conference; Hampton Roads Academy 2-2, 0-2.

Key facts These are the only teams who remain winless in TCIS play. The teams have one common opponent in Norfolk Academy. The Gators lost 21-6; Hampton Roads Academy lost 27-7 last week.

Broadwater at Isle of Wight Academy

Time 7:30 p.m.

Records Broadwater Academy 5-2 overall, 2-1 Virginia Commonwealth Conference; Isle of Wight Academy 5-0, 3-0.

Key facts Broadwater Academy, ranked fifth among the state’s Division III private schools, has won four of its past five games. Isle of Wight Academy, ranked No. 1 in Division III, has given up six total points in its past two games.

Colonial Beach at Franklin

Records Colonial Beach 4-0, Franklin 4-0

Key facts This non-district game matches two teams ranked among the top 10 in the latest Associated Press Group A Division I poll. Franklin is tied at No. 4, and Colonial Beach is tied at No. 6.

Arcadia at Windsor

Records Arcadia 0-5, Windsor 4-1

Key facts Last week, Windsor lost for the first time this season, 36-15 to Washington and Lee. That was the first time this season the Dukes were held to fewer than three TDs.

Tidewater Acad. at Southampton Acad.

Time 7:30 p.m.

Records Tidewater Academy 0-6 overall, 0-4 Virginia Commonwealth Conference; Southampton Academy 3-2, 3-0.

Key facts Southampton Academy has won three of its past four games. RB Michael Milteer rushed for 162 yards and two TDs last week.

Smithfield at Poquoson

Records Smithfield 4-1, 3-1 Bay Rivers District; Poquoson 3-2, 3-1.

Key facts Smithfield rushed for 269 yards in a 35-0 victory over Warhill last week. Poquoson defeated Warhill 20-6 early this season.

Warhill at Southampton

Records Warhill 0-4, 0-3 Bay Rivers District; Southampton 0-4, 0-3.

Key facts Warhill has scored just 15 points all season. Southampton has lost seven consecutive games since last season.
