ELIZABETH CITY
Four Elizabeth City State University students were charged with hazing, a misdemeanor, by ECSU campus police and the case has been turned over to the District Attorney's office, university Chancellor Willie Gilchrist said.
“I’m not sure how that’s going to be handled,” he said.
District Attorney Frank Parrish could not be reached.
No one was injured and the students have not been suspended, Gilchrist said. The fraternity they belonged to, Alpha Phi Alpha, has been indefinitely suspended from sponsoring activities, he said. He plans to be consistent with hazing punishments of the past, he said.
Typically directed at a new member of a fraternity, hazing can include paddling, making him shine shoes, or other menial tasks, Gilchrist said. He learned of this incident two weeks ago, he said.
“Hazing will not be tolerated,” he said.
