County commissioners named Carl Classen the new county manager, according to a news release from Hyde County.

He worked as Camden County manager from 1999 to August 2003, when he was hired to work as town manager of Southern Shores. He worked in Southern Shores until April 2006, when he submitted his immediate resignation.

In October 2006, Classen was hired as interim director of public utilities in Elizabeth City. He left Elizabeth City two months later when he was hired as interim county manager in Hyde County.

Classen has also served as executive director of the Wyoming Association of Municipalities and Southern California manager of the League of California Cities, according to the news release.

Raised in Wyoming, he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Southern California, the news release said.

Classen and the county commissioners agreed to a two-year contract and a salary of $96,875. He is also to build or purchase a house in Hyde County within those two years, the news release said.
