Kaine: McCain phoned in Palin selection

Posted to: News Presidential Election Virginia

RICHMOND

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine said John McCain put less effort into his choice of a running mate than most people do hiring a seasonal lifeguard or groundskeeper.

Kaine, a Democrat, was on Barack Obama's vice presidential short list. He said on his monthly radio show on Washington's WTOP Tuesday that McCain wasn't diligent in choosing Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

He said McCain met Palin once in a large crowd, interviewed her by phone, then offered her the vice presidential slot on the Republican ticket.

"I would think most people would take hiring someone for a summer job more seriously than Senator McCain took the choice of Governor Palin," Kaine said.

McCain knew so little about her that he had to crib her biography off her resume when he introduced her, Kaine said in the lead-up to Thursday's vice presidential debate.

Kaine said he had been introduced to Palin once earlier this year at an event for the nation's governors. He didn't criticize her, but said McCain seemed not to appreciate the seriousness of the decision he was making.

"That was a very bizarre way to make a decision about who would be second-in-command at these very difficult times," Kaine said.

McCain campaign spokeswoman Gail Gitcho defended the Palin pick as one that complements McCain and lashed back at Kaine.

"It's sad to see Tim Kaine make such a petty and political attack," she said. "There's nothing more unattractive to Virginia voters than a bitter political bridesmaid."

Kaine, who is personally and politically close to the Illinois senator, learned that he would not be Obama's choice less than a day before Obama introduced Delaware Sen. Joe Biden as his running mate at a rally in Springfield, Ill.

Kaine said he knew firsthand how Obama agonized over his vice presidential choices.

"It was incredibly thorough, incredibly professional - painfully thorough, with a lot of personal involvement by the candidate himself," Kaine said.

In Tuesday's radio interview, Kaine said he would have cut short his term as governor had he been Obama's running mate, but ruled out leaving early for a cabinet post if Obama is elected. Kaine's term ends in January 2010, and Virginia is the only state that denies its governors successive terms.

"If he'd asked me to be his vice presidential running mate ... I'd have viewed that like a draft notice," Kaine said. "I'd say yes."

it doesn't bother me

But I will not allow anyone to make a wrong assumption. You know what they say about assumptions!

Gertz

I wouldn't let it bother you. Isn't it funny how people assume you merely follow a party line or you are a socialist if you vote for Obama?

sorry orion

"Gertz and individuals like her (Republican and Democrat alike) are scary because their following is for a party, not an individual."

You are totally wrong! I did not litely make my decision to vote for Obama, it was months in the making, and lots of debates and discussion with frinds, family and listening to both candidates. I am neither democrat nor republican, I don't need to follow party line, I have enough sense to think for myself. You might want to give it a try.

spuirrelly, you have the right used ID!

Because she tows the liberal democratic line. Gertz and individuals like her (Republican and Democrat alike) are scary because their following is for a party, not an individual. If they broke down, individually, each candidate, simple logic would tell anyone Obama is nothing more than a media created candidate.

Putting it simply Hitler and Mussolini's reigns were started because people followed the party line and I'm afraid it is starting to happen in this country...

Digroad

you may want to ask the Washington Post about that one. They wrote an article on it...see below.

Soup Is Good Food..

Governor Kaine can take solace in ther fact that Hilary was not chosen either. Hang tight while we continue to watch the Democrat fearsome-foursome try to cover 31 years of bankrupt social policies rooted in the Democrats ever expanded and now failed Community Reinvestment Act and the Cato Institutes recommendation of repeal back in 1994 with the intial investment of $700,000,000,000 to start.

Qualified????

If Pailin is not qualified, How can Obama be?????

Don't worry, be happy

AP Poll: Obama takes a 7-point lead over McCain

Al Gore

I can't remember where I read it, but I saw somewhere that Bill Clinton had spoken with Al Gore maybe twice on the phone before selecting him. And in the "olden days" during the first few presidential elections, the loser of the election became VP. As long as VP's understand their job description is to support their party, does it really matter (when you are voting for issues and not for personalities) who the president selects? And wouldn't the party have some input on strategic selection?

"The Constitution originally provided that the presidential candidate receiving the second largest number of electoral votes be declared vice-president; this method of selection was superseded by that prescribed in the 12th Amendment, ratified in 1804." http://www.history.com/encyclopedia.do?articleId=225172

"In Tuesday's radio

For the sake of VA, please cut your term short Kaine. And keep running your mouth. You're helping the opponent by showing not just VA but the rest of the country your junior high antics.

digiroad

"How would Tim Kaine know what conversations or meetings Sarah Palin and Republican Presidential nominee John McCaine had???"

Ever thought of asking Governor Kaine, yourself?

Gertz Pointless

You seem to have about as much time as our worthless governor does, both spouting non-sense. I am a democrat and Kaine is a sorry excuse for a governor. He has done absolutely nothing for this state but run us further into debt and over budget. He needs to get out of the spotlight and get to work. How can any of you see this in any other way?

Tim Kaines Remarks

How would Tim Kaine know what conversations or meetings Sarah Palin and Republican Presidential nominee John McCaine had??? Does me spy on him? Does read the tabloids? Does he listen to others feeding him information? Did he follow Senator McCaine? What credible evidence does he have to substantiate such an accusation? Did anybody ask, or does he get a free pass on making allegations like Obama does? Did he tell you that while he has increased spending on all kinds of programs since being in office, he is telling others of a 2 billion plus shortfall in revenues over the next two years!!! Does he take any responsibility for that, like the demo's attacks on Gilmore! Attacks on others! That seems to be the one thing politicians do best.

Gov Kaine's comment on Palin

Governor Kaine needs to sit down with Governor Palin to get info on how to get his state back to the back ink and out of the RED!!!!He shouldn't be throwing stones living in his Glass House. DO YOUR JOB TIMMY!!!

Under Kaine's watch

Under whose watch do we have a 2.9 BILLION dollar shortfall? KAINE - a DEMOCRAT. Which party has had the majority in our Congress for TWO YEARS and has DONE NOTHING? DEMOCRAT! There is a reason that the last 3 letters of the 'democrat' is R-A-T.
Don't they have Biden holed up in Delaware 'preparing' for the debate? It is what they do. He really needs it because he can't remember who was president when, or ever when TV was invented. Didn't he plagiarize something years ago? Didn't he just say he was 'under fire' a bit ago, when really he wasn't (embellishment is what they call it, isn't it?)
Getting back to VA - deficit, roads, waste, taxes - Kaine needs to be doing his job instead of trying to get Obama one.

McCain's VP pick

Everyone at this point knows the obvious, Sen.McCain did not do a very good job in selecting his VP nominee. Now all of the Republicans are backpeddling due to his lack of judgement when picking someone who is literally a heartbeat away from the presidency! I know plenty of distinguished everyday people both democrat and republican who have MORE experience in foreign affairs, are well read and more involved in politics than a Govenor of a State who is the Commander in Chief of the National Guard in her state! Can someone tell me with a straight face that you really believe that Sarah Palin is qualified to be VP and possibly President of the US? This whole scenario/selection shows John McCain's lack of judgement and we don't need another president with this type of personality trait! And by the way Tim Kaine has nothing to be jealous of, he has supported this Democratic ticket when others didn't!

From the Washington Post

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/08/30/AR2008083002377_pf.html

The first time McCain met Palin, it was in a crowd. They then met for 15 minutes privately later in the day.

Kaine

It sounds like he's just jealous. And before he claims that she was just chosen as arm candy, he needs to remember that he wasn't considered for his political prowess, he was chosen because they thought he could deliver Virginia to the Dems. Warner maybe, Kaine, I don't think so. He only got into the Governors mansion on Warner's coattails.

don't be childish

Governor Kaine is not pouting he is simply stating facts about Palin. Personally I think the "prepping of Palin" for the VP debate has gone on far to long, and a bit absurd. McCain made the wrong choice, but I'm happy for him because he will loose the election because of it.
When it comes to the death penalty, once again you are mistaken. Even Golmore comuted one. I often wonder just where you people get your information. Maybe you been watching too many tv ads instead of getting to know the candidates.

Thanks Mr. Kaine for your

Thanks Mr. Kaine for your contribution, and to the Pilot for so dutifully publishing it. That's just the way the media operates. Keep feeding them Mr. Kaine. Your constituency is way ahead of you. We know what you're doing. Gwen Ifill, the "moderator" of tomorrow night's VP debate, is soon releasing a book with Obama's name in the title. The public knows Palin will be unfairly "on trial" in tonight's debate. Meanwhile, Biden will get a free pass on all the ridiculous things he has said and done over the years... including the time, shortly after the 9/11 attacks, he proposed we send 200 million dollars to Iran, no strings attached. Remember that? You can bet Biden will not face tough questions about this, or anything else. The "moderator" is writing a book about his running mate! LOL

Hey aalto

Hey allto... You should step back and listen to yourself. Each of your posts do exactly what your accusing "Timmy" of doing. Way to change minds.

And.....

It appears that little timmy is pouting because sarah was picked and he wasn't, so now he resorts to name calling and character assassination. Grow up timmy!

Here is another thing to think about timmy....biden was selected over you. How low does that make you think you were on the list if he was considered the "best" choice?

How long did Obama take to choose Biden?

Sounds like sour grapes! AND I think it is hilarious that Kaine would make any comment about McCain's process in view of the fact that Obama agonized over his VP choice for weeks if not months, and then announced Biden. Was that loud noise all the other democrat VP hopeful's briefcases and overnight bags hitting the floor when the announcement was made. I don't think it was thunderous applause. I have yet to hear anyone democrat or otherwise praise Obama for choosing Biden. Maybe he shouldn't have thought about his selection so long, some of the best decisions made are ones we don't analyze to death.

No respect in VA

"For some people, Kaine can do nothing right -- simply because he is a democrat. It's laughable."

It is very, VERY tough to be a non-Republican in this commonwealth. However, the Dems seem to be more intent on winning this election. All I've seen from the Republican side is a boatload of ridiculous slam emails that have become tiresome very quickly. GOP = generic old peoople!

If and it is a big IF

IF Kaine did half the job Palin did with Alaska Virginia would be in much better shape!

sad But TRUE!!

and Virginia is the only state that denies its governors success

Thank God...

More on why Kaine is correct

The McCain campaign had a silly self-imposed deadline to pick a VP candidate. They wanted to announce the pick the morning after the Dem convention in the hopes of pulling some media coverage away from the of the Obama/Dem wrapup. Did they ever. So the Christian right threatened a floor fight at the RNC convention if Lieberman was selected, and similarly with Mitt. They basically vetoed McCain's pick. With the "deadline" looming and with McCain's own 1 & 2 picks out of the running, he picked the candidate that he met once before. Interviewed her at the ranch and selected her. His campaign then "misstated" the FBI "vetted" her. The FBI said that was NOT the case. And McCain then gives us the "sole mate / partner" speil. Its more like a hastily arranged eHarmony date. Kaine is correct.

She's almost brainless. .

I didn't know how dumb she was until I saw the Tina Fey thing of SNL, played along with the actual Katie Couric interview, and it was hilarious! Palin wrote her own comedy. She couldn't name but one Supreme Court ruling other than Roe V Wade, and couldn't name ONE news magazine she reads regularly to keep up on things; It's like she's a dumber version of Dan Quayle. Definitely. . Dan Quayle in a skirt.

"It is common knowledge McCain met with Palin only twice..."

According to this article, Kaine said that McCain only met Palin once in a large crowd. Sounds like a lie to me.

A couple of things

it is common knowledge that McCain only met with Palin twice. Nice try in pointing out the Kaine is a liar - as for the other assertion made by another poster that Kaine lied about the death penalty, what are you talking about. Kaine made it perfectly clear that he opposed the death penalty, but would follow the laws of VA in regards to it. You sound like the fools who cried foul when he commuted one death sentence, only to be shut down by the governor's subsequent actions. For some people, Kaine can do nothing right -- simply because he is a democrat. It's laughable.
