Kaine says he has no authority to extend hours at polls

Posted to: News Presidential Election Virginia

RICHMOND

Gov. Tim Kaine says he considered expanding polling hours for next week's election but has no authority to do it.

Kaine said on his call-in radio show Thursday that he expects waiting lines next Tuesday but they will be manageable. Virginia has 10,600 voting machines this year compared to 5,900 in the 2004 presidential election. And 30,000 poll workers have been hired this year, compared to 19,000 four years ago.

Kaine spoke an hour before a federal court judge will consider a Virginia NAACP lawsuit seeking to add voting machines in majority black precincts and extend the poll closing time by two hours to handle the expected surge in voters.

Kaine noted that if people stand in line for coffee at Starbucks, a small wait on Election Day isn't unreasonable.

Ten percent more only

If the total new voters is just ten percent, what is the big deal. With double the machines from last election, what is the big deal. It is only tghe NAACP playing the race card - if anyone says this is not about race - I would laugh in their face and inform them they are walking with blinders on.

Get out there and vote!

Don't count on anything changing the hours -- get to your polling place on time and vote!

And be sure to vote for Obama. Obama = Change, McCain = More of the Same. Do you like where the country is now? We've had 8 years of the Bush policies that McCain wants to keep pushing, on taxes, the war, and the economy. And where did it get us? If you think we're headed in the wrong direction, vote Obama for change.

Ignore all the polls, don't let anything stop you, get out there and vote, vote, vote!

Can she not get up at 5:00 am and get to her polling place by 6:00? Can she not get off work and be there by 7:00 PM?

It's one important day of the year; if you or your wife cannot be slightly inconvenienced for this then please don't vote!

Too funny

Well there goes any shred of credibility the NAACP had - they "dropped the lawsuit" due to new and undisclosed information. Wonder if that translates to "Boy, we really blew that one!".

National Association for the Advancement of Colored People

Need another explanation? The very acronym is racist in today's world.

cfrederick

I don't know? Maybe because it was the NAACP who filed the lawsuit in the first place!

Why not a two day voting period?

Why not have a two day voting period? Other states have early voting, why can't we?

Yes, the lawsuit is about waiting in line!

Ironically, no one in the Obama camp had any trouble waiting in line for over two hours at Harbor Park the other night. And, to be non-partisan, the lines were long for McCain-Palin, too, and no one complained about that. Cheers, MGM (I guess it is regarded as silly to bring a book to read like I do, when I know there will be a wait?)

William?

Why do you immediately assume this is a racial thing? Voting hours aren't racist. But they do have an impact on many working people. There are lots of working people, like my wife--whose working hours on Tuesday will be from 8am - 6:00pm--who don't have much of a margin to make it to the polls before or after work. An extension of evening hours would benefit many working people and even the flow of traffic at the polls.

And dfwdabull, read the story. The NC voting hours story had to do with an "early voting" day, not the official election day. Virginia's laws do not allow for early voting except for absentees. Unlike the current presidential administration, our governor does not break the laws when it suits his needs.

so sorry!

Looks like the NAACP will not be happy about this one. Maybe they can get Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson to start a protest!

Re: dfwdabull

No, Gov. Kaine didn't say "it can't be done", rather "he as governor can't do it". Huge difference there. North Carolina Board of Elections extended their hours. I’m not familiar with Virginia law regarding who can extend hours but it could very well be different than NC. You honestly think a Democratic governor would intentionally not extend hours knowing Virginia is a swing state in this election?? Talk about your political career suicide move.

It's pitiful....

isn't it, Orion.

Never have I heard such nonsense in voting, early voting, extended voting, absentee voting, lawsuits, disenfranchisement, blah, blah, blah as in this election year. This whole thing will surely make me suspect of fraud, illegal voters, etc. Voting is a right, for Americans who qualify, on election day....I had no idea it means one doesn't have to wait his/her turn to do it. But yet there are people who party all night and sleep all day. Go figure.

hellooooooo

http://hamptonroads.com/2008/10/nc-elections-board-extends-early-voting-hours

but "kandy kaine" says it can't be done in Virginia.....

OK

So correct me if I am wrong. The NAACP, an advocate for equal rights and to stomp out discrimination against African-Americans, is sueing the Governer of Virginia. The lawsuit is spicifically to put more voting computer is prominately black neighbor hoods and extend the time on the voting. I think that it would have been better said if they used population percentages. Appears to me that they are not for equal rights, or maybe only if those rights benifit only the majority black neighborhoods. Sounds like the NAACP has gotten a little of the PETA flu.

Waiting

I'm waiting to vote on November 4th regardless of lines, my health, etc. These places that have 24/7 voting is illegal for the minority since Mayor Wilder think he's in the majority....OH, BUT, maybe people are more intelligent than most think. You never know how a person votes once in the booth. I have faith that it will be the right decision and the one most pleasing to God and the American family!!!!

Extra Machines?

Are the extra voting machines going to be used for those voters who want to vote more than once?

So, let me get this straight...

...this whole lawsuit is about having to wait?

WHAT?!

The same people that waited for an hour and a half to ride Griffon at Busch Gardens are now complaining that they'll have to wait to vote.

At 7:00 when the "doors close" if you are on line, you will still have the ability to vote no matter how long the line. If you leave you have no right to complain...
