NORFOLK

One of the men charged in the beating death of a sailor in East Ocean View last summer pleaded guilty to first-degree murder Monday in Norfolk Circuit Court .

Melvin Arrington, 19, also pleaded guilty to two counts of malicious wounding, three counts of robbery and two counts of using a weapon during the crimes, said commonwealth’s attorney spokeswoman Amanda Howie.

Arrington is one of 10 people charged in the death of James S. Robertson, 19. Robertson was attacked along with two friends on July 27, 2007, in the 9500 block of 16th Bay St. The men were beaten, stripped and robbed. Robertson’s friends escaped.

The attackers stomped on Robertson’s head and body during the attacks, and he died of his injuries. Testimony has indicated the beating s were gang-related.

Details of Arrington’s plea agreement were sealed, Howie said. Arrington is scheduled to be sentenced in February.
