Mark Warner, in Norfolk, highlights support from veterans

Former Gov. Mark Warner was in town Thursday morning for the kick-off of “Veterans for Warner,” a bipartisan group formed to support the former governor in his U.S. Senate race.

After an introduction by Sen. Jim Webb, Warner spoke for about 10 minutes, flanked by two dozen veterans from across the service branches. He was also joined by Rep. Bobby Scott, D-Newport News, Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim and Norfolk Sheriff Bob McCabe.

Warner highlighted the work he did for veterans during his time as governor, including the creation of the Virginia Department of Veterans Services. He also stressed the need to “check our D’s and R’s at the door” and work in a bipartisan fashion when it comes to veteran issues.

Lawrence Keefe, a retired command master chief who attended Thursday’s launch, said he likes Warner’s fiscal responsibility and open mind.

“He’s not afraid of new ideas,” Keefe said. “That speaks well of him.”

As for why he supports Warner over Gilmore, even though Gilmore served as an Army intelligence officer, Keefe said, “Sometimes the title doesn’t necessarily mean you’re the expert.”
