A new command debuted Wednesday at Joint Forces Command's Joint Warfighting Center in Suffolk.
The Joint Enabling Capabilities Command is designed to deliver specialized support and training to commanders around the world while also identifying and developing new capabilities, according to a news release.
The command unites the Standing Joint Force Headquarters, Joint Public Affairs Support Element, Intelligence Quick Reaction Team, and Joint Communication Support Element.
Marine Corps Brig. Gen. William D. Beydler will serve
as its first commander.
Since 2005, the four elements that make up the new command have sent service members around the world to assist with a variety of missions, including command and control, communications, computer support, intelligence training and humanitarian assistance.
Currently, 90 service members are deployed in Iraq's Anbar province as Task Force Ramadi.
Nassau to join 1907 fleet observance
The amphibious assault ship Nassau is heading to New York City on Oct. 11 with Expeditionary Strike Group
Two to mark the 100th anniversary of the Great White Fleet's global voyage.
The Nassau will host a reception and offer public tours, according to a news release. The event is one of numerous commemorations of President Theodore Roosevelt's decision to send 16 battleships on a worldwide journey that began in Hampton Roads in 1907 and lasted 14 months.
Supply corps officer promoted
Hillary King Jr. recently was promoted to the only Supply Corps limited-duty officer captain billet in the Navy in a ceremony at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base.
King enlisted in 1977. After advancing through the enlisted ranks to chief petty officer, he obtained his commission through the Supply Corps LDO program in September 1988, according to a news release.
He currently serves on the staff of the President, Board of Inspection and Survey, as deputy chief of staff for supply and habitability. His other recent assignments include supply officer for the Naval Special Warfare Development Group at Dam Neck Annex.
Remembrance flaggets recognition
Rep s. Thelma Drake and Randy Forbes submitted a bill to Congress on Sept. 26 to designate the Honor and Remember Flag "as an official symbol to recognize and honor members of the Armed Forces who died in the line of duty."
George Lutz created the flag after his son, Cpl. Tony Lutz, was killed in Iraq in 2005. Lutz is raising awareness and funds to award flags to family members of fallen troops. The organization's Web site is www.honorandremember.org.
