Police are investigating the shooting death of a 15-year-old who was found Wednesday afternoon in the 4500 block of Rochester Court.
At 4:43 p.m., police were called to a playground on Rochester for reports of gunshots fired, said Holly McPherson, Newport News police spokeswoman.
Upon arrival, police found Demyon Gathers, of the 600 block of 31st St., with a gunshot wound to his chest, McPherson said. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:35 p.m.
Witnesses told police they heard several gunshots fired and saw several people running from the scene.
Police are still investigating.
The boy's death marked the 15th homicide in Newport News this year, McPherson said.
