Obama's empty box

With Election Day drawing near, I find it alarming so many people are ignoring or are unaware of the real Barack Obama.

All undecided voters must dig for the facts and educate themselves. Don't believe what you see on the TV news or read in print. Just because it's there doesn't make it fact. Far too often today, it's opinion.

If you're going to watch a debate, change the channel when it's over. Otherwise, you run the risk of having what you saw reshaped by the pundits.

Democrats and most of the media only want you to see their creation, the 'pretty box' that is Obama. They don't want you to see what's inside the box.

If you peep inside, you won't find anything pretty, like, say, accomplishments. What you will find under all the dazzling wrappings are ugly destructive things, like liberalism, socialism and radicalism. Educate yourselves before you bear responsibility for electing the least qualified and most liberal president ever.

"To many, normal people who

"To many, normal people who intend on voting for him he is in fact the lesser of two evils"

How does looking for a handout make you normal? I have listened closely and that is the only thing he has not changed direction on seems set to do for people.

Oh Rudy,

This is going to hurt. You might want to look away...

Democrat Barack Obama on Friday soared 11 points ahead of Republican rival John McCain taking a double digit lead for the first time in a Newsweek poll amid deep concerns about the economy.

Obama now leads McCain nationally by 52 percent to 41 percent among registered voters compared to a Newsweek survey carried out a month ago, before the economic crisis began to bite, and which had the two candidates tied at 46 percent.

Do you think it's possible that the majority have educated themselves and you are full of, well, right wing propaganda?

We know a little more about Palin now

According to the most recent news from Alaska:

"A legislative investigator found that Palin violated state ethics laws and abused her power by trying to have her former brother-in-law fired as a state trooper."

Gonna be some questions now, you betcha.

We know something about Palin

she and her husband subscribe W style leadership a la the recent finding of their abuse of power in trooper gate. It seems when Palin/McCain refer to themselves as "mavericks" they really mean bullies. Haven't we seen enough of that via "signing statements" aka reasons Bush feels he is above the law. Of course, this kind of behavior has got their base worked up. Do we really want to vote for someone who uses "kill the traitor" as a campaign slogan? If so, why?

AM

It's not like Sarah Palin was trying to stay veiled. She was doing her job as Alaska's governor--anyone could have Googled her. She has only moved to national status in the last seven weeks so *that* limits things.
With the latest round of public mud-slinging, not just on blogs, I want to say again (not directed at you, AM) that we need to be very careful how we word things. The hateful language is everyone's right, I suppose, as Americans, but God or whatever moral system exists will hold those who spew hate language responsible if someone like Mr. Obama or Ms. Palin gets hurt or killed. I have seen comments about both of them that sound inciteful of violence! The one who stirs up the nut to hurt a candidate is just as guilty as the one who actually does it. This is a moral universe in the end! Cheers, MGM

Mary

what he is alluding to is that Palin is a relative unkown (although we are learning more about her) -- Barrack Obama is not. It is a very valid point.

Asleep at the wheel!

Wow! imagine that. After about years as a state senator, about two or three books out, and after about 25 debates, these people that say they do not know who Obama is, must have been totally asleep for the past years or just plain ignorant!

JWB

Golf

You're too funny. You flip off the Obama hysterics, then come up with your own about Ms. Palin.
Are you referencing the joke someone is sending around (well, some R's are taking it seriously) about JMC's mom being old, so he has the longevity gene, but BO's parents both died young and he smokes, then there's Biden who has had two aneurysms, then there would be President Pelosi. Oh, man, there went my chill bumps!!! Ha ha. Cheers, MGM

Fear tactics, all.

Just what is it that is supposed to scare the bejeebies out of us regarding Barack Obama? What is it we already know that should make us run screaming from the voting booth at the mere sight of his name? What mysterious 'something' is lurking out there that you think we MIGHT NOT KNOW yet? Some of you have been watching way too much '24'.

You can not vote for Barack Obama because you don't like him or how he approaches the issues (remember them???); but, please don't try to make anyone believe you won't vote for him because you don't know enough about him. It's a hoot to say that Barack Obama scares the hell out of you, then watch you turn around and say that Sarah Palin gives you a warm, fuzzy.

She scares me beyond belief. And, John McCain's infatuation with his running mate is even more frightening. His mother may be close to 100, but with his medical issues, we have nothing that makes us think he'll make i

So the pundit is a pundit

I had to laugh at the poster that the started this thread. He goes and tells you not to watch the news, and then goes on to show that he watches the news. Obviously fox or Hannity or the same crowd, as his talking points were straight from those propaganda machines. More of the same hypocrisy that we see in every day of out lives now.

Re:everything comment

"Everything we know about Obama should scare the heck out of everyone. Everything we don't know should scare us even more." I am a proud member of the "everyone" club, and I am not scared. You do not speak for everyone, and you don't speak for me. You sound a bit paranoid. I don't know everything aboug McCain. Do you?

There are actually 7 votes for Virginia

There are other parties which have candidates for POTUS. Sure would be nice to get them all together for these debates.

Vice a 2 minute rule, let's go with 5 or more minutes and get a moderator to keep them on the question/topic and away from prepared statements.

Three votes

You forgot the one to keep McCain out of office. That is the one I'm casting. Realize that Obama is only the "anointed one" to the radical right. To many, normal people who intend on voting for him he is in fact the lesser of two evils.

Let's face it

There are two votes out there. One for Obama and one to keep him out of office. I am no big fan of John McCain and never have been. At least we know what we are getting into. Everything we know about Obama should scare the heck out of everyone. Everything we don't know should scare us even more. I am quite sure that he will deliver the "Change" he is promising. But, at what cost? It pains me to think that once again we would be voting for the lesser of two evils, but to vote for someone because they put on a great show is wrong.

You said it the best I have

You said it the best I have heard. Remeber you reep what you sow.

Liberalism is only "ugly and

Liberalism is only "ugly and destructive" in newspeak, the language of the radical right. The right's mantra is "the first thing you must do in order to kill an enemy is to dehumanize them." That is why you use "liberalism" as you do, ignorant and naked agression. Only a fool would take a single nasty word you say seriously. You're a hate monger and a doom sayer. We the people are getting tired of scarey fairy tales offered by you and your ilk. Your myths of the liberal apocolypse are weak, mean, old and obviously pure bluster. Now, what politician does that remind me of?

Can Obama be any worse?

Eight years ago, the United States was five trillion in debt. Now, we're going to be north of $11 trillion by the time Bush leaves office. We owe China, Russia, the Arabs and Europe big time. You can't be a superpower and a debtor to the world at the same time. George Bush and his neocon gang put this Great Country on the path to financial ruin, while paying off their Wall Street buddies before they "get out of Dodge". This bailout isn't for the average American; it's for the greedy pin-striped pigs that got us into this mess in the first place.

Unbelievably, my Republican Party, in concert with the Democrats, have brought the worst elements of socialism for the rich to our Country. Our choices will be, either a pretty empty box, or a large sack of horse dung. A brilliant mind, or an impulsive, grumpy old war horse. A vote for McCain is a vote for a continuance of this financial debacle, with even more il

And, McCain is selling. . . ?

Poor old John McCain has been so all over the board that no one has a clue just what the heck he IS selling? I think he might be selling flag pins since his campaign and fellow Republicans have made such a big deal about Obama's choice of lapel jewelry, or lack of jewelry. I don't think we really need this a hustler in the White House at this particular time.

McCain has nothing, I repeat, ABSOLUTELY nothing going for him this go around. We can't say that his box is expty, though. There's the Keating Five memories; there's the fact that this military guy couldn't do any better than 5th from the bottom of his class at the Naval Academy; there's the fact that he just can't bring himself to release his own military files and reports that many honorable veterans have requested. And, there's his palling around with George Bush in the last several years - goofy smirks, arrogant grins and condescending manner

Boxes...boxes...boxes

Pandora's Box, which, when opened, released a cloud of evils. All that remained inside the box was one small comfort--hope.

Philosophically, that is what Senator Obama is selling. Just hope... err...just words.

It will not happen

Except for local events the Pilot does no reporting. The are a clipping service. They depend on other sources for their information and pick and choose the view the feel should be expressed.

The LTE left treason off of their list.

I find it alarming

That the party who finds themselves down in the polls resorts to hystronics and repugnant gutter smears against their opponent, desparately eager to avoid addressing the issues. I suspect that Rudy here bears the responsibility of putting the WorstPresidentEver (and Cheney) in to office not just once but twice. Its sad that the paper chose to print Rudy's shrill, destructive, and radical letter.

Ha Ha Ha

Oh Rudy, you crack me up... Silly Republican, this election is about something else, as well - judgment... something John McCain has demonstrated he does not have as far back as his days at the Naval Academy. I'd rather have the very intelligent Obama who demonstrates sound judgment than the aging McCain who appears nothing but cynical and out-of-touch with very little good judgment.

Lets see the VP

actually do some investigative reporting instead of regurgitating the Obama talking points. How about running a story proving or disproving Obama's assertion that he can pay for his $880B in new spending by leaving Iraq and reducing current federal spending as he said during the debate? How about detailing how his "tax plan" works out with his promise to eliminate the Bush tax cuts which benefitted everyone? Explain how 95 percent of Americans can get a tax cut when 40 percent don’t pay taxes and how redistribution of wealth isn’t part of that plan. There are plenty of stories that could be done on both candidates if there is someone in the VP who actually knows how to dig for information and can be unbiased.

Virginian-Pilot

As my main news source, you are hereby challenged to help fill the boxes. Run one topic a day from now till the election, starting with health care, and giving each candidate's platform *in his own words.* I know that in the end, the paper will endorse Obama and that is okay, but let's clear the smoke and mirrors in the meantime and talk some substantive issues. Your readers should not have to spend their days parsing through other newspapers and websites online to find out what the candidates are saying they will do in each individual area!!! Cheers, MGM

Runnin' on Empty

Even if there is nothing in that box, which I don't think is accurate, it beats the heck out of what is McMain's box. If the endless wars, misjudgments and catastrophes brewing in there aren't enough, there's Palin.
