Phony flier says Virginians vote on different days

Posted to: Elections News Virginia

FOLLOW-UP: Officials find source of fake election flier, won't press charges (Nov. 3, 2008)

RICHMOND

A phony State Board of Elections flier advising Republicans to vote on Nov. 4 and Democrats on Nov. 5 is being circulated in several Hampton Roads localities, according to state elections officials.

In fact, Election Day, for voters of all political stripes, remains Nov. 4.

The somewhat official-looking flier - it features the state board logo and the state seal - is dated Oct. 24 and indicates that "an emergency session of the General Assembly has adopted the follwing (sic) emergency regulations to ease the load on local electorial (sic) precincts and ensure a fair electorial process."

The four-paragraph flier concludes with: "We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause but felt this was the only way to ensure fairness to the complete electorial process."

No emergency action has been taken by the General Assembly. It is not in session and lacks the authority to change the date of a federal election.

State Board of Election officials today said they are aware of the flier but disavowed any connection to it.

"It's not even on our letterhead; they just copied the logo from our Web site," said agency staffer Ryan Enright, noting the flier has been forwarded to State Police for investigation as a possible incident of voter intimidation.

Election officials did not specify in which Hampton Roads localities the flier had been spotted.

State Police are aware of the complaint and are looking into it, said spokeswoman Corinne Geller.

In 2007, the General Assembly passed a law making it a Class 1 misdemeanor to knowingly communicate false information to registered voters about the date, time and place of the election or voters' precincts, polling places or voter registration statuses in order to impede their voting. The measure is one of the few such deceptive voting practice laws in the country, according to the watchdog group Common Cause.

New Flyer

I just found another flyer: an emergency session of the General Assembly has adopted the follwing (sic) emergency regulations to ease the load on local electorial (sic) precincts and ensure a fair electorial process...All people who think that they are smart, vote on wed.
I think this will filter pretty good!

Resq

Resq, it's hard to take someone seriously who wears a tin-foil hat. So, go now and play with your Star Wars action figures like a good little child.

A summation of RESQ's post

An intentionally false and illegal flier that has been circulating in the area which attempts to mislead democratic-leaning voters into missing the opportunity to vote is strictly the fault of Democrats. A perfectly logical argument for the tinfoil-hat club.

Like it or not, voting is a right, not an IQ test

resq, I'm sure you understand that if you don't back up your comment stating "I have it on good authority that this was perpetrated by the democratic party so that they could blame the republicans", we all assume you're lying.

As we all know, the right to vote is not an IQ test. You may may not be old enough to remember that the Civil Rights Act outlawed poll taxes and literacy tests. I repeat, voting is a RIGHT. If someone does not know the date for voting, are you suggesting they should be denied their right to vote? Let's dig deep and see who the elitist really is.

Prime Example

Everyone needs to take an IQ test before being allowed to Vote!!! Part of the paper today: Follow the Money!! 125 Billion of the 700 Billion so called bailout 25 Billion Citi Group, 25 Billion Wells Fargo, 25 Billion Bank of America, 25 Billion JP Morgan Chase, 10 Billion Goldman Sachs, 10 Billion Morgan Stanley, 3 Billion Bank of New York Mellon, 2 Billion State Street. What a wholesale theft of taxpayers money and most of you Idiots out there think this is a good idea. Stupid is as Stupid does as Forest Gump said.

America: the next Third World Country?

Between all the false registrations, voting computers that are either faulty or can be easily manipulated to come up with incorrect voting records, eligible voters being purged from the voting rosters, our ridiculous system for financing political campaigns and now this where someone or some people are trying to fool people into not voting on the correct date, America is looking more and more like a corrupt Third World country.

nah it was a computer glitch

lost my connection, thought I'd lost my post. nothing you wrote does any more than make me chuckle....so, how about that land, you interested? 'scuse me, gotta go make some adjustments to my tinfoil hat.

Amazed

Folks, some form or another of this "flier" has been bouncing around the Internet since as far back as 2000. Physical forms even before then. It's like many other Urban Legends or spam - false. If you're all worked up over this, you must also still be waiting for Bill Gates to send you $100 for every e-mail you forward. Let me know how that works for you.

Resq

Did my hypocrisy remark hit too close to home? >;-)

oh, yeah, dupont, you got me there....

I had no idea that the elections are always the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. Some people are actually able to discern a prank when the see it. This has absolutely nothing to do with politics, other than the election is near and made a good target. Actually I believe there is a bigger lesson to be learned from this, and it has something to do with common sense.

Hey, if you still think that the republicans did this to keep democrats from voting, I've got some land south and a little east of Suffolk to sell you.

Actually DuPont

I would have taken it for exactly what it was, somebody's idea of a joke. But then again, like I said, I have on my tin foil hat to make sure that the aliens don't plant all those conspiracy ideas in my head. It is so sad to see so many people actually take this whole thing seriously. As stated, you would have to be entirely out of touch, with absolutely no education to not know that the election is held on the firt Tuesday, after the first Monday of November. Were you sleeping during Civics class?

Two faced

Resq, I wonder how you would have reacted if the flier had informed Democrats to vote on the 5th. I think we both know: rage. Hypocrisy is alive and well, isn't it, Resq?

Pathetic

Yet another pathetic example of the RepubliCON experience.

Phony Voter bulletin

If this is being investigated - and if the perpetrator of this misinformation is discovered - will there be prosecution?

All this phony concern about Acorn (whose false registrations won't result in a single fraudulent vote) is a screen for this kind of true voter fraud. And the people who attempt to defraud others of their right to vote should sit in jail.

confussion

I know this to be a true flier, because I sent it to all my democrate buddies and they said they were glad to get that news because they didn't have a clue what day they were supposed to vote, or for who.

No matter who did it in the

No matter who did it in the 60s, or what side of the fence you're on, or who is actually doing it now—you'd have to be ignorant not to see what its purpose is, which is to keep Dems from voting. Plain and simple. Of course you'd be ignorant to blindly follow these instructions without some sort of follow-up or confirmation but whoever is doing this is depending on that. People might be ignorant but THEY STILL HAVE THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE.

Republicans don't cheat! Huh!

Two elections later, we still have the same miserable "cheats" trying to rig the election again.
Al Gore lost the election by 6 or 7 electorial votes, It all came down to Florida - Jeb Bush and the attorney general there.
Wow. this country is going to hell in a handbag.

sheesh

it is amazing how fast this became some great republican conspiracy designed to keep the democrats from voting. Just goes to show the mindset....same ol' same ol' there is always someone trying to keep you down isn't there? Maybe it is time to show some responsibility for your own actions. Everyone knows when the the polls are open for voting. (anything any different is either mail-in absentee balloting or early voting in some states) If you actually fell for this, shame on you. It's nobody's fault but your own. (I have it on good authority that this was perpetrated by the democratic party so that they could blame the republicans) Now, go away and leave my tin foil hat alone. Get your own or your mind will be taken over by the little green men.

REPUBLIDUMS

JEP23 WROTE;

The liberals are really ticked off about this. Probably because they know half of their votes are coming from people that would actually believe this flier.

REPLY;

Yes as opposed to half the Republicans who believe the earth is only 6000

yrs old and man tamed Dinosaurs to help plow the fields;and evolution is "the Devils" trick.

and the other half are arrogant[stupid] enough to believe this tactic will work.

"Stupid is as Stupid does" [from a man far smarter than any Politician(:
