NORFOLK

Gunfire in downtown Norfolk disrupted Tidewater Community College on Monday afternoon. No one was injured.

Norfolk police said a man shot at another man just before 1 p.m. at the intersection of Market Street and Monticello Avenue, in front of MacArthur Center and adjacent to TCC's campus.

The victim was taken into custody after police found him in possession of drugs, said Officer Chris Amos, a police spokesman.

"We believe there's a connection" between the victim and the shooter, Amos said.

TCC briefly locked the doors of the Martin Building after the shooting, said Laurie White, a spokeswoman for the college.

The college also sent out an alert via e-mail and phone to students and faculty saying that the campus was safe after shots were fired near the Martin Building.

Police did not release the name of the man who was shot at. They believe the shooter got in a vehicle and fled the scene, Amos said. It was not clear whether anyone else was in the vehicle, he said.

Police were questioning the victim Monday. Drug charges were pending, Amos said.

Police did not find any cars or buildings hit by bullets, he said.

Officers working downtown heard the gunfire, Amos said. Students immediately began texting and calling each other's cell phones.

Crashetta Thomas of Norfolk, a student at TCC since 2005, said she was in the library when she heard gunfire.

"I heard five shots, and I was scared because I was studying," she said.

When she went outside, police officers were everywhere.

"It's kind of weird, because you would never expect" it, she said.

Students were still hearing about the shooting and talking about it later in the afternoon.

"You could hit an innocent person and spend the rest of your life locked up," Aaron Bryant of Norfolk said.
