LaShawn Merritt, the two-time Olympic gold medalist, will be honored Saturday when he and his mother, Brenda Merritt Stukes, participate in the Peanut Festival Parade.

The parade, which begins at 10 a.m., will travel from South Broad Street to West Washington Street to North Main Street and end on Finney Avenue, according to a news release from the city of Suffolk.

At noon, following the parade, there will be a reception at the Suffolk Center for Cultural Arts where Mayor Linda T. Johnson and Suffolk City Council members will recognize Merritt, a Portsmouth native, for his Olympic achievements by presenting him a key to the city, the news release said. Youth representatives from the city also will have the opportunity to meet Merritt during this event.

The Woodrow Wilson High School graduate won gold in the 400-meter race and the 1,600-meter relay in Beijing this summer.
