Posted to: Taste Test

George Pfeiffer

71, Chesapeake

Occupation semi-retired, real estate appraiser and mathematics professor at Tidewater Community College

Nominated The Jewish Mother

On Reuben sandwiches "I grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y., and going to the deli was a frequent excursion. That's how I fell in love with Reubens. There is something about the taste of the ingredients when it's served hot and gooey with a kosher dill pickle that I find very enjoyable."

Debra Bazemore

54, Virginia Beach

Occupation Retired health care provider

Nominated My own. My husband seconds this!

On Reuben sandwiches "Critical element: lean corned beef."

(Debra's husband Mark assisted her throughout the testing)

John E. Searing

38, Norfolk

Occupation Financial Advisor with UBS Financial Services

Nominated My mother's Reuben

On Reuben sandwiches "My mom didn't love cooking, but was a genius with sandwiches. Being from an Irish family, the Reuben was the pinnacle of all sandwiches. A Reuben needs the right ratio of ingredients: crispy bread, corned beef (never too dry), Swiss cheese, sauerkraut and thousand island dressing and should be a little messy. My heart would skip a beat when I saw extra napkins on the dinner table, that meant it was Reuben night."
