Teen changes name to address of PETA anti-dissection site

Posted to: News North Carolina

ASHEVILLE, N.C.

A 19-year-old Asheville teenager says she legally changed her name to CutoutDissection.com to protest animal dissections in schools.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports that Asheville High graduate Jennifer Thornburg now wants to be called Cutout. Her new legal name is the Web address for an anti-dissection page of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals' site.

The teenager said she began opposing dissections in middle school, after a class assignment to dissect a chicken wing made her uncomfortable. She helped create a policy at her high school that allows students who object to dissections to complete an alternative assignment.

She is now an intern for PETA. She said most of her family members still call her Jennifer.

Well, I certainly understand

but it is, to me, very sad that there are so many people who just don't care. And not just about animals, but about health care, the environment, the state of our economy, and, most of all, about the type of government we have now and want to have in the future. "It's not my problem and I can't do anything about it anyway, plus it is too far gone". Of course you have chemicals in your water, but do we need to make it worse, or better? Why do we tolerate so many antibiotics in our food production, when it can be done better? This is my country, and I do care about these and other issues. And we live in a place where we can make a difference without being tossed in jail or worse for demanding changes. The vast majority of the world would be thrilled to have our problems and would be excited to try to improve and progress because for them the future would, for the first time, really mean something. And, if you do trade places with your dog, please stay away from dognappers or you might have a truly bad day and be sold to a testing lab.

No not really

When Obama gets in I will have free health care forever, ...right? So on the infection score, no harm no foul as long as I don't have to pay for it. My water is already polluted with so many chemicals and drugs and poisons one more won't hurt, so there's no real surprise there either. My children just hit the "hormone" years so the real question is "Would I notice?" As for treating animals goes? I'd trade lives with one of mine in half a heartbeat, no questions asked, no backsies. They are treated like little furry gods. But as for animals I do not own, or animals which are used for testing to ensure me a longer life? That's all good, as long as the law is followed, if it isn't it's on them not me.

Well you might care

when you get an infection that can't be fought with antibiotics and you lose your limbs or life. Or when you water supply is polluted with raw sewage from holding ponds. Or the excess of hormones in the environment affect the health of your child. It is not all about compassion for sensate beings, but also for real threats to ourselves. My point was not to get PETA converts, like I said, they can be over the top. But to remind folks that just because PETA takes an advocacy position, does not mean it is wrong. Believe it or not, most people do care about how we treat our animals…or so I thought.

Who really cares

Factory farming, fur, wholesale slaughter, who cares. As long as I get my McNuggets hot and toasted golden brown, debeaked to save time and in case the head ends up in my bag I won't hurt myself. I honestly don't care about how my choice of food gets to my table, or desk, as long as it's hot, fast, and tasty. Post vids to the news, write articles of abuse, show pictures of monkeys in full body choke holds, as long as the meds get approved, the fur is warm and soft, and the abuse videos can end up on youtube synched to Jackson's "Beat It" I really don't care. Got the point now you peta trolls?

I would guess most commentators

haven't a clue what factory farming is like. Animals boxed in cages so small they cannot turn around, beaks removed, tails chewed off, standing in excrement and injected with hormones to force growth. The antibiotic problems we have now with the "superbug" staph infections is related to the massive amount of antibiotics fed to animals because of the raising conditions. And, of course, the immense environmental impact of huge holding ponds overflowing with raw sewage.
Now, that being said, I am not a vegetarian and do enjoy meats and fish, and try, when available, to get humanely raised, non-antibiotic meats, even though it may cost a bit more. The greater the market for such foods, the lower the price as such farming takes on a greater role in our food supply.
Now, PETA often goes over the top, as do many passionate advocates of positions both right and left, but they do bring attention to many instances of animal treatment that should alarm any person with a hint of compassion. A little less knee jerk and a bit more understanding would go a long way on both sides.

maybe she can change her name to....

"i am a giant attention hungry feminine hygiene product which consists of a bag and a nozzle".

seriously, america, THIS is what happens when you don't hug your kids.

Glad the first choice for the name change was available

I heard the other was Unintelligent Excrement.

Now if there was ever a

Now if there was ever a terroist group, Peta is it.

Strike a blow for freedom

Not.

Well, it's safer than going to Israel and standing in front of a bulldozer, and will be about as effective.

There's a real world out there, this has nothing to do with it.

Animal Testing

My wife just bought a shampoo and on the label it states "we do not test on animals" so I guess they let the testing be done on the general pulic and see how many lawsuits and complaints they get first. Also if it were not for testing on animals then the medical society would test on our children and loved ones instead including dissections? Long live PETA!
