That's one hot commericial, Mr. Sabrosa

It’s something to savor when a local cook simmers his way into the big leagues.

Duane Thompson’s ride into the world of food started when he was a football player at Virginia State University. After the team lost a big game, he slunk home hungry only to find that his roommates and friends had inhaled everything in the fridge.

So Duane started cooking, and eventually ended up developing a recipe for salsa made with roasted red peppers. He’s turned that into a business, Sabrosa Foods, and jars of his rich, red salsa can be bought now at local Farm Fresh markets and Richmond-area Sam’s Clubs and Ukrops.

After trying Sabrosa salsa, you’ll never return to El Paso. Of course, it costs more, $6.50 a jar, but it's a good use of the epicurean budget. The sauce has a rich and complex taste, and due to the roasted red peppers, there’s none of the heartburn that sometimes accompanies tomatoes. Every time I think about it, I want to go get a jar. I suppose I’ll have to get one today!

Anyway, I spoke with Duane recently (he’s one of those really nice happy fellows) and he said that business is going well. But the big news is that rows of his pretty salsas are now in some large chains and he even has a television commercial. It’s airing locally on “The Cheryl Wilkerson Show” in the Hampton Roads area Cox cable local channel 4 WSKY.
