VIRGINIA BEACH

A third-grade teacher at Seatack Elementary School has won $25,000 for her work in the classroom and the community. Recharta Walston is the first teacher in the Virginia Beach City Public School System to be named a 2008 Milken Family Foundation National Educator. She’s one of three teachers in Virginia to receive the honor. The others were from Chesterfield County and Albemarle County.

The Milken Family Foundation awards were established in 1985. A state’s department of education appoints a panel to decide the recipients of the annual Milken Family Foundation Award. Criteria include professional leadership and impact on students, colleagues and the community.

Virginia’s Superintendent of Public Schools, Patricia Wright, surprised Walston with the unrestricted $25,000 award Friday in the school cafeteria in front of nearly 330 students and 70 faculty and staff members.

Walston, 44, a Virginia Beach resident, grew up in the Seatack area and attended the old Seatack Elementary School. She has been teaching for 12 years.
