U.S. Senate candidate Mark Warner and congressional hopeful Glenn Nye stumped together Wednesday, hitting notes of optimism about the economy and calling for investment in aging roadways and alternative energy.
They spoke in the morning to about 200 employees at Geico Insurance in the Corporate Landing office park.
Nye, a Democrat locked in what analysts are calling a tight race against U.S. Rep. Thelma Drake, often invokes former governor Warner as he seeks to portray himself as a force for bipartisanship. Warner is facing former governor Jim Gilmore.
Warner stressed the need for a nationwide energy plan that employs alternative sources but includes drilling and nuclear power.
"Don't lose hope," he said. "The country is going to turn the page and we're going to get a fresh start."
Nye suggested loosening credit markets for small business that want to expand and increasing investment in infrastructure to create jobs to help the economy recover.
"We are in a tough market, but if we harness American ingenuity we are going to come out stronger," he said.
The Cook Political Report, a nonpartisan political newsletter, has reclassified the 2nd District race between Drake and Nye from "Leans Republican" to "Toss Up." A Drake campaign spokesman disputed that assessment.

there is a difference between experience and a rubber stamp
"The second district with its dependence on military and defense related industries needs an experienced legislator. In these economic trying times we don't need an on-the-job training congressman."
Nye has experience that Drake will never have and will never understand the only thing Drake understand is voting partyline and all she has done is be a rubber stamp for Bush. The 2nd district deserves better, and that will be Glenn Nye.
Hopefully new representation
will listen to new ideas. Traffic is a major local problem. But new roads are only a part of the solution and new roads are distant fixes and very expensive fixes. Hopefully the newly elected Glenn Nye and Mark Warner can see that some simple actions can make a significant difference. Banning cell telephone use while driving will provide an immediate and significant improvement in traffic flow. Banning cell telephone use may be politically unpopular, but so are taxes and tolls and construction delays. Hopefully our soon to be elected new representatives can see that our traffic congestion problems are related to drivers more than they are to our roads.
Hey, I'm educated too. .
I have a BS from Old Dominion, and I'm voting Nye. Speaking of education you do know Drake only has a high school eduation? Probably a GED. Anyway, she has been nothing but a "rubber stamp" for Bush, and she has no ideas or thoughts of her own. I'm predicting she will go down in flames with MCsame and Gilmore, and I will be elated!
Absentee Congressman??
It is unbelievable that some are supporting a candidate like Nye who has so little time not only in the district but in the region. He knows zip about the district and communications with its elected officials. More importantly, he has little experience in political negotiations. The second district with its dependence on military and defense related industries needs an experienced legislator. In these economic trying times we don't need an on-the-job training congressman.
Nye for Me
Pierreg, I'm educated, too... and smart enough to see Thelma Drake has overstayed her welcome. Glenn Nye is also educated, unlike Thelma Drake, and will much better serve this district. Frankly, I'm not sure how starting off with "I'm educated" helps your argument for her.
With the baseless argument...
With the baseless argument that Drake voted with Bush 95% of the time (so what), will there be similar outrage that Nye sides with Warner or the Democratic party 100% of the time? People make such a big deal out of nothing or spin votes or positions to satisfy their own logic, especially Nye. I reviewed Drake's voting record and find few if any decisions that I disagreed with.
vote glenn nye
There is not question Glenn Nye will better represent Virginia and the 2nd district. We have listened to Thelma Drake far too long, and it's the same thing on a consistant with George Bush, 95% of the time. I can't help but wonder who will tell Drake what to say, when and how to say it.....probably Karl Rove.
We cannot continue down the same path of failed politics, and Drake has played a major part in it's failure.
Vote for Glenn Nye, and lets turn this county back in to representation of the people, and not a political party.
Vote for Glenn Nye
Representatives have two year terms for a reason. This is not a life-long job. Glenn Nye brings refreshing youth, education, experience and potential for better representation for the 2nd District.
Drake
I'm educated and I'm voting for Thelma Drake. No amount of biased reporting here in the VP will cause her to loose. Voters are smarter than you think and while the VP spews negative reports about anyone with an R behind their name, voters actually look at the issues and the candidates' positions before they decide.
Socialism
My wife and I are socialists. We both carry a Social Security Card, Medicare Card and a Library Card. We love our socialist fire department, police department and schools. Except for the potholes, we even like driving on the socialist interstate highways.
The younger generation should also appreciate Social Security and Medicare; otherwise, you would need to have your parents move in with you and pay their medical bills What would be left for your children??
Thank God for Democrats! They gave us both programs.
