Mike Connors

After earning a nice check by winning his first pay league two seasons ago, Mike committed to getting the scoop on the fantasy football competition. But since you’re not in any of his leagues, he’s more than happy to pass his knowledge on to you. Feel free to show off your brilliance to him, too.

Week 6 injury report

First off, Tony Romo, Clinton Portis and Eli Manning are gone in the Fantasy Chatter contest. The details are in the column that appears in Saturday's Virginian-Pilot. I'll take picks up till 1 p.m. Sunday.

Several big-name quarterbacks almost definitely won't be playing Sunday, including Cincinnati's Carson Palmer, Seattle's Matt Hasselbeck and Detroit's Jon Kitna. Also, Jeff Garcia is expected to replace Brian Griese for Tampa Bay. Ryan Fitzpatrick will start for the Bengals, Charlie Frye for the Seahawks, and likely Dan Orlovsky for the Lions. Of those three, none are worth starting, unless, like me, you're in a 16-team league where every regular starting quarterback is already taken. If that's the case, go with Fitzpatrick, who faces the Jets and their 31st-ranked pass defense. But with those three big-names out, several receivers should see the bench this weekend. I'd sit Lions WR Roy Williams, Bengals WR Chad Johnson and every Seahawks WR except Bobby Engram. I'd stick with Lions WR Calvin Johnson, Bengals WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh and Engram, because their QBs will complete at least a few passes, but don't expect them to put up No. 1 receiver numbers. The Jets defense becomes a good start, as does the Packers'.

Among the other major injuries...

- Eagles RB Brian Westbrook and WR Reggie Brown are out. Pick up RB Correll Buckhalter if you can; Philadelphia faces San Francisco, which is 23rd against the run. Also start WR DeSean Jackson, as WR Kevin Curtis is expected to play but is not yet at full strength, making Jackson a top target.

- Buccaneers WR Joey Galloway is out again.

- Bears WR Brandon Lloyd is doubtful and extremely unlikely to play. But RB Matt Forte is still Chicago's top receiver. TE Greg Olsen's value increases, though.

- Falcons WR Roddy White (head) is questionable. Atlanta keeps saying the injury is no big deal, but White keeps sitting out practices. Check Sunday to make sure he's in the lineup.

- Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin (head) has officially been ruled out. WR Steve Breaston remains a good start, especially against Dallas' 17th-ranked pass defense.

- Seahawks WR Deion Branch (heel) is questionable but not expected to play. He's a good sit anyway.

- Broncos TE Tony Scheffler and RB Selvin Young are out. WR Eddie Royal is questionable but expected to play. He's a good No. 3 fantasy receiver.

- Chargers WR Chris Chambers (ankle) is doubtful. That bumps up WR Vincent Jackson's value.

- Saints WR Marques Colston (thumb) is questionable and expected to play, but TE Jeremy Shockey (hernia) is doubtful. If Colston goes, start him. I'd stick with WR Lance Moore for this week also, since Colston likely won't play full-time.

- Raiders RB Darren McFadden (toe) is questionable. While he's likely to play, the injury has limited him in recent weeks, so sit him. RB Justin Fargas and RB Michael Bush are better options, Fargas being the best.

- Browns TE Kellen Winslow (illness) is questionable. Considering Winslow's still in the hospital, Cleveland's passing attack is a mess and the Giants have the second-ranked pass defense, sit him even if he plays.

Now for more more Sunday previews...

Ravens at Colts, 1 p.m.: For Baltimore, start the top-ranked defense, RB Le'Ron McClain definitely, and RB Willis McGahee as a good bye week fill-in. McClain has 4 TDs the past three games and is Baltimore's goal-line carrier. McGahee has only 170 rushing yards through four games, but Indianapolis is last in the NFL against the run (188.5 ypg). Indianapolis is fourth against the pass, making WR Derrick Mason (261 receiving yards) and TE Todd Heap (78) good sits. For Indianapolis, stick with QB Peyton Manning and WR Reggie Wayne and TE Dallas Clark, but don't expect big things against Baltimore's top-ranked pass defense (128.5). Sit WRs Marvin Harrison and Anthony Gonzalez, who are usually no better than No. 3 fantasy receivers. Sit RB Joseph Addai. Baltimore's run defense is also first (64.0) and the Ravens have yet to allow a rushing TD. K Adam Vinatieri is a good option since Baltimore rarely allows touchdowns.

Panthers at Buccaneers, 1 p.m.: For Carolina, start RB Jonathan Stewart over RB DeAngelo Williams. Williams was the hit back last week, with 123 yards and 2 TDs, but since Carolina shares carries, expect Stewart to get the ball near the end zone this week. Start QB Jake Delhomme and WRs Steve Smith and Muhsin Muhammad. Delhomme has two straight 230-yard, 2 TD games, and Tampa Bay is 21st against the pass (218.6). Smith has 16 catches for 262 yards since returning from a season-opening two-game suspension, and Muhammad leads the team with 25 catches for 358 yards. Also start the Carolina defense, which has 10 sacks and eight forced turnovers. For Tampa Bay, sit QB Jeff Garcia and WRs Antonio Bryant and Ike Hilliard. Garcia's numbers after he replaced Griese last week (93 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT) weren't great, and Carolina is third against the pass (156.0). Start RB Earnest Graham. Someone has to pick up the load with Griese out, and Graham leads the team with 393 yards and 2 TDs. Also start the Tampa Bay defense, which has 11 sacks and 11 forced turnovers.

Jaguars at Broncos, 4:05 p.m.: For Jacksonville, start RBs Fred Taylor (as a No. 2 or 3 back) and Maurice Jones-Drew (as a 1 or 2). Taylor has only 44 rushing yards the past two games, but has thrived this season against bad defenses, and Denver is 25th against the run (134.0). Jones-Drew has only 39 total rushing yards the past two games, but is second on the team with 19 catches for 161 yards, so he'll pick up points that way. Denver is 30th against the pass (254.4). For that reason, start QB David Garrard and WR Matt Jones. Garrard has two straight 200-yard games, while Jones has a team-high 23 catches for 269 yards. Sit the defense, which is allowing 26.5 ppg the past two games. Denver's scoring 29.8 ppg on the season. For Denver, RB Selvin Young and TE Tony Scheffler are out with groin injuries. Start RB Michael Pittman, the goal-line back who will take added carries with Young out. Start QB Jay Cutler and WR Brandon Marshall every week, and start WR Eddie Royal against Jacksonville's 26th-ranked pass defense (237.2).

Packers at Seahawks, 4:15 p.m.: For Green Bay, start QB Aaron Rodgers and WR Greg Jennings. Rodgers will play despite a bad shoulder, and Seattle is 25th against the pass (237.0). And Rodgers threw for 313 yards and 3 TDs last week despite the shoulder injury. Sit WR Donald Driver, who hasn't broken 80 receiving yards yet this season. Start RB Ryan Grant. He rushed for 83 yards last week, his highest total since Week 1, and Seattle is 24th against the run (129.5). For Seattle, start only RB Julius Jones, TE John Carlson and WR Bobby Engram. Jones has two 100-yard games the past three weeks, and Green Bay is 27th against the run (161.4). RB Maurice Morris is healthy again though, so now is a good time to trade Jones high. Carlson didn't catch a pass last week, but tight ends are always good options with new quarterbacks. Charlie Frye is a veteran, but hasn't started since 2007 Week 1, so chances are he won't be winging the ball much. And Engram caught eight passes last week in a season debut; he's always a good start in leagues that award for catches.

Sunday morning I'll preview the final four games of the week, and provide whatever injury news I can.
