Waggin' Tails

Wondering what you can do with your dog in Hampton Roads? Get the answers here. I'll be discussing dog care, nutrition, training, play, and games to play with your dog.

Pet owners should be well informed when it comes to caring for their pet. Recalls on food ingredients, brand name foods, and toys make it necessary for pet parents to have information. But there is so much information it would make your head spin. Angie has a knack for getting and sorting this information. Having run two pet related businesses and having rescued two dogs so far, she has years of experience in pet care and training. For questions or comments, you can contact her at bigdogmom@mailpuppy.com.

Who Owns Whom?

I know it’s time for pet blessings and celebrating your pets. Do you own your pets or do they own you?

I was looking for stuff on the internet yesterday and found this quiz. I thought it was cute. It explains a lot around my house.

Does your dog own you?

  1. If you are cold, you put a sweater on your dog.
  2. You have a picture of your dog in your wallet, but not one of your kids.
  3. You often claim that it was love at first sight with you and your dog.
  4. You can’t fully enjoy yourself without your dog.
  5. No matter how large your bed is, it is not large enough for you and your dog(s).
  6. You spend more on clothes and food for your dog than you do for yourself.
  7. You have no reservations about kissing your dog on the lips, even when you know where his lips have been.
  8. You let the neighbor dog sleep over.
  9. You believe there is no such thing as a naughty dog.
  10. Your vet and grooming bills exceed your rent.
  11. When you need someone to talk to, your dog is your first choice.
  12. You sit on the floor if the dog gets in the chair first.
  13. You talk to your dog when you are driving. He answers.
  14. Your dog taught you to fetch and roll over.

So, who owns whom?

Halloween is coming up. Keep your pets safe. Some pets are scared of people in costumes and can act out. They can nip, bite, run off or cower in fear. You may think it’s funny but it creates fear in your pet. Leave your pet in the house if you know there will be scary costumes and loud noises around. Don’t expect your pet to be calm around noisy groups of kids in costume either. I know some dogs may be okay with it, but others may not be so calm.

Also, keep your cats inside on Halloween, especially dark colored cats. I have a little black cat and I know people can be superstitious. Some cruel people do really horrible things to cats on Halloween. Keep them safe by keeping them inside.

Don’t let your pets eat candy either. Too much candy can cause diabetic shock in small dogs. They just can’t handle all the sugar. Chocolate is poisonous to dogs too. Dark chocolate is the worst. It can cause kidney damage and possibly kill your pet. Grapes, raisins, and some nuts can do the same thing. If you want to have Halloween treats for your pet, here’s a recipe to try out.

Peanut Butter Biscuits

1 ½ cups of water

½ cup olive oil or canola oil or vegetable oil

3 tablespoons peanut butter

2 teaspoons vanilla

2 cups whole wheat flour

½ cup cornmeal

½ cup oatmeal

Mix everything in a bowl. Knead until smooth. Add extra flour or water if needed. Roll out on a floured board. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters. Bake at 400 degrees on a greased cookie sheet for 20 minutes. They will get harder if you let them cool in the oven after it’s turned off.

Now that you know who the leader and the baker are in your home, have a safe and Happy Halloween!
