Kimberly Brown’s school day includes a 90-minute commute. That’s one way on a school bus. After taking courses at Southampton High, the senior heads to Norfolk to study photography and painting at the Governor’s School for the Arts.
The high school arts program offers courses in music, visual arts, theater and other areas. One in eight students is accepted into the program, said Victor Frailing, chairman of the Visual Arts Department, and most classes don’t exceed 12 students.
“We’re a big family. It’s not like that most places,” Brown said.
Gotta start somewhere
“It’s kind of embarrassing, but the first thing I ever remember doing is coloring a picture of Barney,” she said.
Brown’s elementary school masterpiece was a big hit. “I’d been coloring at home, so I knew how to stay inside the lines. Everybody else’s was just, like, all over the place. I thought I was, like, the best one in class.”
Finding her passion
Photography satisfies Brown’s hunger for instant gratification. “You can get so many great pieces off of just an hour,” she said.
