Former DNC chief McAuliffe to explore '09 governor bid

RICHMOND

Terry McAuliffe, a former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, filed papers Monday to explore a run for governor next year.

The Fairfax County resident plans to travel the state for the next two months to meet with voters and assess his prospects. He plans to announce his decision by Jan. 7.

"I think I can make a difference," McAuliffe told The Associated Press. "I think I can go out and fight for people. I can create jobs. I think I can take this state in a new direction, and the thing I would like to do, too, is to come out with some big, bold ideas. "

Two other Democrats have been actively seeking the gubernatorial nomination for more than a year: state Sen. Creigh Deeds of Bath County and Del. Brian Moran of Alexandria. The party plans to hold a primary on June 9.

Attorney General Bob McDonnell, a former Virginia Beach legislator, is unopposed for the Republican gubernatorial nomination, which will come at a state convention.

McAuliffe, 51, has been a longtime fixture in national Democratic circles. In 1980, at age 22, he became national finance chairman for then-President Carter's unsuccessful re-election campaign. He was a key adviser in Bill Clinton's victorious 1996 presidential campaign. McAuliffe was national Democratic chairman from 2001 to 2005.

This year, he was national chairman of U.S. Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential campaign. He later made several campaign swings around Virginia on behalf of U.S. Sen. Barack Obama.

McAuliffe is considered a formidable fundraiser. He has not run for public office before.

I think so too

"I think I can make a difference," McAuliffe told The Associated Press. "I think I can go out and fight for people. I can create jobs. I think I can take this state in a new direction, and the thing I would like to do, too, is to come out with some big, bold ideas. "

I think McAuliffe will make an excellent consideration for Governor, it's going to be an interesting race. Once thing for sure Bob McD is no happy meal...... maybe Sarah Palin can teach him about the Constitution.

Time to clean house up in Richmond.

Time to clean house up in Richmond. Kaine, a democrat, has ruined Virginia. Look at the condition of our roads and the budget. Both are a total failure. Kaine has been a failure except for maybe eliminating bottled water from his budget. Virginia does not need another democrat.

Terry McAuliffe

Go back to New York and run against another screaming liberal. Virginia don't need you!

going for the Trifecta of misery?

Wasn’t the past 2 democrat governors enough?

yikes..

I voted for Obama..I voted for Mark Warner... I even happily voted for Glenn Nye but in 2010 if this joke is running, I'm going to have to vote for the Republican.

oh yes, get used to it....

finally the balance of power has shifted to NoVa. We are 1 of every 3 votes in the commonwealth, i.e., Arlington, Fairfax, Prince William, Loudon, and Faquier counties, plus the city of Alexandria. We support the rest of the state, i.e., for every 1 dollar sent to Richmond, NoVa sees a .19 cent return. Jim Webb calls Fairfax home, as does Mark Warner, oops, sorry, he's an Alexandrian. And despite what you may think, if Terry McC runs for govenor he'll win just the way Obama and Warner won last week. We'll wait for you to catch up with us.

OH....NO....

Give us a break.....we're being ruined to the max! Virginia is beginning to loose its identity.....S.O.S.

Just what we need

to finish this once great state.

Name

He isn't called McAwful for nothing.

.

fogetaboutit.

Do yourself a big favor. Stick to what you know, which is being a party hack. Virginia needs a real politician, not someone whose ego thinks he is.
