Former Newport News assistant police chief convicted of DUI

A former assistant police chief in Newport News was convicted of drunken driving Wednesday and has been demoted to the rank of captain, WVEC-TV was reporting this morning.

Dawn D. Barber, former assistant police chief, has appealed the conviction in Hampton General District Court, according to online court records. A judge ordered Barber to enroll in a state alcohol safety program, the TV station reported.

Barber was stopped by state police on Aug. 16 and charged, according to the station and court records.

A reckless driving charge was dismissed, the court records show.
