NSU freshman center gets NCAA clearance to play

Posted to: College Basketball, Men Sports

Norfolk State freshman center Kyle O’Quinn has been cleared by the NCAA to play basketball this season, adding to the Spartans’ front-line depth.

The 6-foot-9 O’Quinn, from Campus Magnet High in New York, ran into problems when the NCAA did not immediately clear him for freshman eligibility. He was cleared, however, to practice while his case was being reviewed.

“His high school had not updated its list of core curriculum classes online with the NCAA,” NSU Coach Anthony Evans said. “Once the school took care of that, his transcript was re-evaluated and he was cleared to play.”

O’Quinn is expected to compete for playing time in the post. He averaged 20 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocked shots as a senior.

“Kyle gives us some versatility,” Evans said. “He dribbles well and shoots well from the perimeter. He’s quite skilled for his size.”

The Spartans open their season Sunday at Longwood at 7 p.m.
