A final, unofficial count of votes released this afternoon confirmed Will Sessoms unseated longtime Mayor Meyera Oberndorf by 6,843 votes.

Sessoms garnered 74,305 votes, compared with Oberndorf’s 67,462.

Numbers don't add up

Guess what, Just a mom knows how to do percentages ...The amounts increased duh,, but the percentages over previous years did not?

Why don't they give the small businesses that have supported the oceanfront for years tax incentives or support to improve and upgrade?
Read between the lines.....

It seems like a better use of tax money..Helping many more with a lot less expense to taxpayers......Instead of the City trying to force them under so a select few can profit... Sorry it just doesn’t make sense and the money doesn’t add up..And no one is safe from the injustice of it...

Your Wall-mart theory is not going to make the oceanfront or our city better… Everyone should have a opportunity...What about preserving history and character?

Corruption? I don't think

Corruption? I don't think so. Even the VBTA has not made that accusation. Resort revenues actually increased, but not as much as hoped, yet that performace was better than most resorts in this challenging year. I don't condone the alleged rascist comments by police, but again, it is only alleged, and frankly, the behavior by patrons at the oceanfront after 2:00 PM is apparently despicable, and to the degree that the bars are the source of this uncivil behavior, they should have role in preventing it. Simple public safety demands a solution, and instead of fighting the police, you would think the bar owners would find a way to serve the lawful and civil customer while assisting law enforcement in apprehending those who break the law.

Educate me

Sorry… wrong just your everyday mom researching on the internet because I’m so disgusted by this city and the election. I’m worried about the corruption in the city I’m raising my family in and will be buried in ….I may not have your vast knowledge about investment …But I can read between the lines and guess what I know how to add and subtract too…. Please educate me because what I see isn’t pretty…Total Revenues did not increase more than previous years.. We actually lost the Canadians and don’t appeal to the demographics of the majority of are visitors who drive here…The VB police are racist and Rude the oceanfront looks like an War Zone with the number of them It’s just flat out uncomfortable..I would encourage everyone to read the reports and decide for yourself…Personally I didn’t think any of the candidates were good for the job…If it came down to voting for the lesser of two evils. VB LOST

Civil Servant?

Let me guess; Pleez is a civil servant to whom the concept of investment is a foreign. Sure, current and immediate cash flow can be increased if we cut out capital expenditures for investment in the future operations of the enterprise. This same axiom applies to public or private ventures. In the short run, revenues go up, and the managers look like geniuses (and take bonuses). Problem is, down the road, the effects of failure to invest begin to show. Infrastructure breaks down, the product looks old and weary, and in no time at all, cash flow starts decreasing as well. In our case, that is exactly what Bob O'Connor and the VBTA advocate in regard to the resort; that is, don't reinvest, take all the cash flow for tax relief, and don't worry about the future. Fortunately, John Moss and the VBTA got 16% of the vote; apparently, most voters know more about the health of enterprise than they do.

public private????

Sessoms We cant wait for more of you puplic private ventures with your developer friends!!! Who makes up the difference?? Did the private partner developers do as well???

LOL

ends do not justify the means

Thanks Mike
You wouldn’t be the anonymous donor who paid for the 30’000 fake fliers exploiting Obama and the voters would you???http://hamptonroads.com/2008/11/beach-candidate-sessoms-flier-shows-him-obama

Is there no INTEGRITY left in VB "the ends do not justify the means”

Have fun telling Oprah how deserving he is of his new position…LOL….

I supported him until he showed his true character with that stunt.
Everyone who was worried about the military should really be worried now….The republicans won’t claim him and the Dems don’t want him…

actually....

Watergate: Deep Throat.... "follow the money"...

Virginia Beach residents pay taxes to city treasury...

council approves "public private venture" awarding taxpayer money to developers...

taxpayer money given to developers......

developers fund campaigns of those willing to approve more "puplic private ventures"

any questions???

Actually

Well in fact, the money that Will raised throughout the community was necessary for him to get out his message of economic development, tax reform, and support for transportation improvements. No one could have defeated a five term incumbent with 95% name recognition unless that candidate had both the positions worthy of a serious candidate and the resources to get to voters so they understood his positions. Those who criticize Sessoms for knowing what he had to do to win, and following through on his pledge to his supporters to run an effective and disciplined campaign, are either naive to think he could have done it without the resources or ignorant enough of political campaigns that they think he had positions not worthy of strong consideration nor convincing to the voters. Sessoms ran his campaign just like he will serve; that is, with vision, discipline, energy, and a commitment to all segments of the community. Well Done!

out with the old, in with the new

All I know is that it was time for Obendorf to go. She has done more harm than good - wasting tax dollars and allowing too much over-crowding in our area - putting us in the national spotlight with BRAC commission because she allowed homes to be built where they shouldn't have. We nearly lost our beloved Naval Bases at least twice due to her poor decisions. And where would this city be ecomomically without our military?? A ghost town!!

As for our mayor-elect, it will be interesting to see what this "banker" does for our city. will he follow in the over devlopment footsteps?? Afterall, banks LOVE to loan money, right?? And since we're speaking of money, I would bet he got hefty donations from his friends at TowneBank.

I forone can't wait to see how our city is run and what changes (if any) are truly made.
