SUFFOLK
Humans who handled pigs during a traffic crash in September did so humanely and gently, Suffolk Commonwealth's Attorney Phil Ferguson said in a letter to PETA this week.
Ferguson's letter was in response to a complaint filed by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals in October. The Norfolk-based animal rights organization said that Smithfield Foods and Murphy-Brown workers, while unloading the overturned hog transport truck on Va. 10, pulled pigs by their ears and prodded them with tools to get the traumatized animals moving.
In his investigation, Ferguson said, interviews were conducted with police officers, fire and rescue personnel, animal control personnel, and employees of Smithfield Foods and its subsidiaries.
Ferguson said the officer in charge of animal control was at the accident scene for six hours. She said "at no time did personnel moving the animals from the damaged trailer to the new trailer ever abuse any animals."
In the letter, Ferguson praised Murphy-Brown - the hog-production arm of Smithfield Foods - for its response to the accident, which killed about 65 of 190 hogs on the truck.
"They provided their trained response team, equipment and veterinarian," Ferguson said in the letter, which also was signed by E.C. Harris, chief investigator.
Dan Paden, research associate with PETA, said the group is disappointed.
"All that's changed is that the industry brings more and bigger tarps to prevent the public from seeing workers' cruelty to pigs," Paden said.

Once again....
The pigs in Smithfield have more rights that some Commonwealth of Virginia, taxpaying citizens.
thank you
PETA....not to worry. I promise you these little piggies were handled with the utmost of care and compassion while being offloaded the overturned truck and loaded back onto their new ride. Of course once they got to the plant they were strung up and slaughtered just like every other day.
Pigs vs PETA
I certainly hope the pig handlers treated the pigs better than the swines from PETA.This article makes me hungry for a hot ham sandwich.
Both Sides Have a Point
I think its a good thing that we have folks like PETA who are interested in animal welfare and abuse issues. Ive seen factory farms up close, and they are not happy little slices of heaven for the animals, thats for sure. Sick or wounded animals are sometimes processed along with the rest. Like anything else, there should be some oversight provided. We eat these animals, fine. But that doesnt mean they should be abused or tortured along the way. Rounding up pigs is tough work, so I think PETA may be jumping the gun on this one. But its through efforts of groups like PETA that humane treatment legislation is introduced and enforced.
Arguing with PeTA
Face it, arguing with the people Producing Excrement Through Activism is like mud wrestling with a Pig.
You both get dirty,
and the Pig likes it.
Now where's my sausage McMuffin?
Corporate pig farming
For those of you talking about pig bites or thinking you can use tails to drag pigs around, pig teeth are clipped at birth so they're dull (no need for teeth when you're eating fatty gruel your whole life and they'll be slaughtered before the finish rotting out); also, tails are docked so the animals don't chew them off from the stress of their close containment.
Do some research before you call others being uninformed.
They still here
People Embarrassing the Tidewater Area.
PETA: who are these freaks?
I've always wondered why such left-wing idiots would set up shop in Norfolk. Even the left coast makes fun of their antics. I remember eating dinner at ODU Whitehurst hall, and these PETA guys bust in dressed as bloody chickens claiming that chickens are being "holocausted" because of people like us...what a bunch of nut jobs.
Step up to the plate PETA
If PETA thinks they can do it better, well, let them try.
bell
peta you just want to hear your bell rung.those pigs though domesticated are still pretty wild to handle.i am not sure if you have been bitten by a pig but they can be pretty mean and have to be restrained,or coaxed to move.you have to be what looks like rough with a lot of these types animals, and what looks like cruelty is just the way of doing things.you cant call to them like a dog here piggy piggy piggy, and expect them to do what you want so you have to herd them where you want and sometimes it takes pulling their legs or ears.they are an investment and income for the vendors they have to treat them good if they want top market price, bruised or injured animals don't sell as food.
Ham for Dinner
These PETA people are idiots. I don't understand why they are in the news. What do they know about raising hogs? Nothing. How do they think you get a hog to move? The ear is a good handle. Doesn't hurt the hog at all. Sometimes the tail and the ear will help with a difficult hog, but if that doesn't work, a cattle prod always does the trick. Glad the professional took care of it though. My ham and turkey were great this Thanksgiving. Can't wait for Christmas. :)
Sue PETA
Smithfield should sue PETA. Those cowards in their nice waterfront building wasting space in Norfolk should be sued for defamation. The state should also send them a bill for having to investigate it.
By the way, the pigs were fine, and delicious.
What rubbish
I can't even believe this is a top headline. Or that any state authority wouldn't laugh these PETA fruitcakes out of the office. Someone should file a complaint on PETA for being a public nuissance and fine the organization a fee equal to it's entire net worth.
PETA
PETA still = People Eating Tasty Animals. Yum yum. Hand me another pork chop please.
So tell me...
How many thousands of animals did PeTA kill last year? Somewhere in the THOUSANDS!
PeTA, please take this opportunity to shut up-your stupid antics and idiotic statements have made your creditability something of a joke.
Tarps
(Dan Paden, research associate with PETA, said the group is disappointed.
“All that’s changed is that the industry brings more and bigger tarps to prevent the public from seeing workers’ cruelty to pigs,” Paden said.)
What it sounds like he is really saying here....is a tarp was blocking Peta's view & they saw little or nothing.
