Rep. Forbes asks for feds help in Chesapeake spill

Posted to: Chesapeake News

CHESAPEAKE

U.S. Rep. Randy Forbes said he is concerned about drinking water contamination in the neighborhood near a tank that collapsed and spilled 2 million gallons of liquid fertilizer.

In a letter Wednesday to the Environmental Protection Agency, Forbes requested federal assistance to address concerns about drinking water and possible environmental impacts to the Elizabeth River.

Forbes also asked whether federal dollars are available to help relocate the residents of South Hill, where homes sit just steps away from several fuel and fertilizer storage tanks.

He said Wednesday he learned that while there is federal assistance for the temporary relocation of residents after a disaster, "there's no real federal dollars available for relocating citizens in situations like this."

Forbes said he will continue to work with city officials to find a solution for South Hill, parts of which were flooded after the tank collapse.

"If 2 million gallons looked like this, imagine what even a larger amount could do," Forbes said. "It's pretty dramatic if you live next door to these kinds of tanks."

ummm

I know pollution is bad and anything and anybody that pollutes should be buried under our prisons but, don't they add ammonium-polyphosphate and urea-ammonium-nitrate fertilizers to lakes in Canada to help increase the fish populations? Am I misunderstanding this? Maybe we could just add some ammonium-polyphosphate to keep down phytoplankton growth and be done with it. Are these people using well water?

The City Should Buy The Neighborhood

The lots could be then rezoned from R to M...& resold for a large profit. I would have to guess that taxes collected on M are greater than R as well.

Why

Did the Federal Government cause the spill??? No let those responsible take care of it.. That is what is wrong here expecting other to pay for your problems.. Deal with it

535

Is it any wonder the federal budget is as large as it is with 535 of these people.

Read the constitution Mr Forbes.

(hint: There is nothing in there about tank collapses, or the word environment for that matter. )

Another government bailout....

I keep reading about the government aiding these people, but what is the company responsible for the integrity of this tank doing? Shouldn't the magnifying glass be solely focused on them?
