BAYSIDE
Two Brothers Dog Wash has tails wagging, with a self-service concept that makes life easy on a dog's best friend.
"I recommend it 100 percent," said Brad Henlen, who brings his three dogs in for their baths. "The whole process is pleasant and painless."
Henlen spotted the business as he drove home and is a return customer.
"It was a hassle to clean up the tub at home after the dogs, and they got anxious being dropped off at a professional service, so this is just much more relaxed for all involved."
Owned by brothers Jared and David Henderson, the business opened in September. It is just south of Virginia Beach Boulevard on Newtown Road.
The newly renovated space is bright and clean, with five wash stations. All are sanitized after each use.
Brushes and combs remove tangles or excess hair. Five shampoos offer care for various skin and coat types, along with antibacterial ear, eye and mouth wipes.
Water pressure is constant and maintained at 102 degrees, which is cooler than the typical human shower.
Wash station tubs are at table height, for ease of use, and ramps or ladders help dogs access the tubs.
Families are welcome to share the duty, with aprons for all.
"It's fun to wash my dog Bella here," said Charlotte Burkett, age 6, as she soaped up her American bulldog. "Bella gets clean, and she won't drink all the bathtub water."
Each station also has hand-held dryers, as well as towels and chamois cloths.
"Dryers are set at low so they won't harm the dog's skin," said David Henderson, a Virginia Beach resident.
Complimentary designer dog cologne is offered in playful scents such as Doggidoff Cool Dog, Tommy Holedigger, Pucci and DGNY.
Cost is determined by dog's weight and coat type, and ranges from $10 to $22. For an additional fee, nail clipping and flea treatment are available.
Although self-service, assistance is cheerfully offered.
"The best way to explain it is that David remembers all my dogs' names, but I'm not sure if he remembers mine," said Henley, laughing. "The dogs come first here."
The store stocks locally made leashes, collars and reversible bandanas by K9 Just In Case that feature hidden pouches for storing an empty doggie bag.
Toy brands include Chuck-it, Zanies and Planet Dog. Lupine leads and collars with lifetime guarantees come in colors and patterns from classic to camouflage.
Dog treats include Bark Wheats organic biscuits and dog food by Royal Canin.
A grand opening will be held Saturday. All wash proceeds on that day will go to the Chesapeake Humane Society. The society will provide information on spaying and neutering, and will bring a few dogs and cats for adoption.
