Virginia Beach City Council: Davis edges McClanan for seat

Posted to: Elections News Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH

With about 94 of 95 precincts counted in Virginia Beach this morning, Reba McClanan – first elected to city council 28 years ago – has lost her Rose Hall district seat to Glenn Davis.

Three other council incumbents are positioned to return: At-large councilwoman Rosemary Wilson; Harry Diezel in Kempsville and Bob Dyer, who was unopposed in Centerville for a second term.

Davis, 34, criticized McClanan as a chronic dissenting voice on the council and said McClanan cast votes against the Town Center and past budgets.

Davis, who raised twice as much money as McClanan, also pointed to McClanan's absence from several voter forums.

“I think the voters of Virginia Beach wanted change,” Davis said Tuesday night. “I think the citizens are looking for cohesiveness.”

McClanan had served on the council since 1980 – except for a four-year period in the mid-1990s. McClanan has represented the Rose Hall District since it was created in 1998. The voting district – which spreads south of Virginia Beach Boulevard and west of London Bridge Road – was created in January 1998.

Wilson, 58, knocked back a strong challenge from Virginia Beach NAACP President Georgia Allen. Wilson, who received strong support from real estate brokers and builders, is an advocate of projects including the private-public Sportsplex proposal soon to come before council. She’d also like to see the old Dome site at the Oceanfront developed.

In addition to Allen, Wilson was challenged by charter boat captain and activist Leona Schuler, retired businessman Lawrence Teator and 23-year-old Old Dominion graduate student Keith Strausbaugh.

Diezel, a retired city fire chief, has been a advocate for public safety issues. In his campaign, he stressed his long-term public service and understanding of government .

Diezel’s two challengers were the Rev. Joe Flores and retired Navy radioman Andrew Jackson.

Pastor Joe Flores Not Finish Yet

As a candidate running against Harry Diezel, I am grateful for the support shone to me by the wonderful people of Virginia Beach. Of course I am disappointed that I did not win, however, I am encourage by the outcome. Compared to the other candidates, the Joe Flores campaign raised almost no money, purchased only one day of radio time,(election day) we didn't buy the pilot or any other printed media and had no yard signs or big signs up until the day of the election. Additionally, we had no web site, no public office, we did no direct mail, had no endorsements and only distributed about 20,000 pieces of literature. Wait that's not all We had no campaign manager, no operative secretary, no full time or part campaign staff until the last week of the campaign and received solicited no corporate or special interest contribuitions, no contributions over $50.00 from any one person. Furthermore, we were up against one candidate, 4 powerful endorsing organizations, the good boys network, an African-American population who was saturated with lies about me by "old Black guard" gate keepers, a white and Hispanic community that new very little about me and all that was topped by biased newsp

Dixie, dixie

Oh, I wish I was in the land of cotton, old times there... If you are going to reference your heritage please, please, please spell it correctly. It's antebellum, not anti-bellum. It means before the war, i.e. the War of Northern Aggression. You know, the one that brought us the likes of Oberndorf in the first place. That said, Sessoms will only hasten the demise of Virginia Beach, which is a second rate "resort" anyway. Vb is already losing population to overdevelopment, and Sessoms et al should really put the pedal to the metal on that issue, not that the hobbit lady was any better. The fine citizens of VB voted a developer to be their mayor. They will most likely get what they deserve. However, VB will never be "the greatest city in the south" unless you tear it down and start over.

Taxpayers will miss Reba's vote in support of common sense.

Let's stack the Council to ram through more taxpayer subsidies for special interests and the good 'ole boy "buddies" ... welcome to Virginia Beach - the best City Council money can buy.

I think it is time for us to get what we deserve!

GIR, I think the good people of Virginia Beach have spoken. This is the largest City in the Greatest State in the USA! People are tired of the No we can't attitude. Meyera and Reba were very small town minded and I understand that point of view also, I'm a Princess Anne County Native. But you have to be totally naive to not see the potential that this area has. YES WE CAN be the greatest City in the South! The Commonwealth of Virginia is experiencing a cultural renaissance not seen since anti-bellum and I believe with Will Sessoms, (another Princess Anne County Native) Virginia Beach is going to lead the charge. I know many of you think I may be crazy, but thats why we need a mayor that is from Virginia Beach not an out-of-towner from up North who doesn't have a spectacular vision for this amazing City. Nothing against people not from here, I'm just of the opinion that if you are born and raised somewhere you have a deeper appreciation for it. GOD BLESS VIRGINIA AND GOD BLESS VIRGINIA BEACH!

to "complain no more;"

you're probably right. you mean "ye," though---not "yee." i am assuming you mean "ye" as in "you," and not "yee," as in "haw..." it's an honest mistake.
