VIRGINIA BEACH

The Virginia Beach Fire Department will conduct a live burn Monday to test a new lifesaving device.

The “Last Chance Rescue Filter” is designed to provide firefighters with 15 minutes of filtered escape air in the event they run out of air or have a catastrophic failure of their self-contained breathing apparatus while fighting a fire, a news release from the fire department said.

Testing will take place at the Fire and Emergency Medical Services Training Center on the 900 block of South Birdneck Road. Ten firefighters from various fire departments in the region will participate and more than 50 fire personnel from 13 departments will be there to observe, the news release said.

The first live burn is to begin at 10 a.m., and the testing should be complete by noon.
