NORFOLK

Faced with a crush of calls and requests for more copies of Wednesday's newspaper on Barack Obama's presidential win, The Virginian-Pilot will print an additional 40,000 copies today.

After an initial additional press run of 15,000 copies Wednesday morning, demand kept growing and 15,000 more were printed and delivered this morning, officials said.

They weren't enough.

"The switchboard is just being bombarded," said Mark Quan, Pilot circulation director. "Farm Fresh is limiting people to one copy. One woman bought 60."

By this evening, the 40,000 additional copies should be in the nearest grocery, convenience or drug store, Quan said. The first 30,000 extra copies were distributed to 7-Eleven, Wawa and Farm Fresh stores only. This time, the copies will be spread out.

Quan said the papers should be in stores this evening. He couldn't commit to a specific time.

The latest round of copies will be the final press run for Wednesday's historic edition, Quan added.

"What's important here is this is the last time we're going to the well," Quan said.

That brings the total number of extra copies of the paper since yesterday to 70,000, Quan said.

Expecting additional interest, The Pilot printed an additional 8,000 copies on Tuesday night.

By 9 a.m. Wednesday, retailers were requesting more, and people were calling and stopping by the newspaper's offices.

"We've never had to do this since I've been here," said Quan, who's been with the newspaper for eight years.

The Virginian-Pilot started Wednesday with a run of nearly 196,000 copies. That included 20,500 for "single-copy sales," up from the usual 12,500. Single-sales copies are not delivered to homes and are usually sold at outlets such as convenience and grocery stores.

The newspapers went fast, triggering the first added printing.

"We had store managers from Farm Fresh, 7-Eleven, Food Lion, Wawa who were jamming up our phone lines saying they were sold out at 9 o'clock," Quan said.

"We've had people here downstairs," he said, referring to the newspaper's main office on Brambleton Avenue, "sometimes 15 at a time, wanting to buy more than one."

Pat Washington of Virginia Beach is in that category. Washington went to a few stores, with no luck, before arriving at the newspaper office in search of extra copies.

"My mission was to pass them out to my family and to save them," she said. "It's history; it's history."

Backside...

Good Lord Have Mercy...maybe the Virginian-Pilot can print a photo of Obama's backside so people can kiss it...get a grip...he's a man, not a God from Mount Olympus!

Help wanted

People need the extra papers so they read the help wanted section.

Obama..Black, White or Bi-Racial

Apparently President Elect Obama doesn't mind addressing his "race status". Assuming he meant definition #1. If he did he is obviously claiming to be bi-racial.
*mutt   /mʌt/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [muht] Show IPA Pronunciation

–noun Slang. 1. a dog, esp. a mongrel.
2. a stupid or foolish person; simpleton.
*dictionary.com
In reference to statement "mutts like me."

Actually, Obama is Black

because the 1 Drop Law was in effect at the time of his birth. Even if he weren't Black, he'd still be African American because his father was African & his mother was American. If Obama had been adopted shortly after his birth, with his birth records sealed, by either a Black or White American family that gave him a name such as James Mitchell, no one would question if he were Black or White or biracial.

It is only because he is black that more papers are being printed. I don't care what race the President is, but for goodness sake, this is ridiculous! And who is obsorbing the cost of 55,000 additional copies?"

I know!!! I bet you they start using more black ink!!! I bet you they make the hard-working-real-merican-God-fearing-right-thinking people pay for all those papers while the lazy poor people just sit around and read them!!! Oh No!!! Doom!!! This IS ridiculous . . .

The pilot saw a chance to sell a bunch more papers. They should have printed them on fine parchment and framed them all.

kimw31435 - P.S.

I ran out on Tuesday night to find a copy of the Pilot. There were none at my Walgreens, but I was lucky to score the last two at 7-11. So you really have no idea what you're talking about.

kimw31435

Those comments were directed at the paper, people here notoriously are always saying what a horrible rag the Pilot is. Yours was directed towards people and meant to incite. Completely different.

On instinct kept my copy instead of putting in recycle bin...

and while I should sell it for twenty dollars; I decided to put it away with my other newspaper front pages - the Challenger disaster, Clinton election and impeachment, and 9/11.

Ridiculous!

-Give me a break. It's just stupid to assume that we shouldn't at least recognize, if not celebrate, electing the first non-white president.-

I did not dismiss the significance of this election. You dismissed the significance of all elections other than this one.

why always race?

JORDANM said, "Our 44th President will be black. Big deal!!! Who cares what color his skin is?"

I agree. So why did you bring it up?

Sore losers

The number of so-called 'adults' that are proving themselves to be sore losers here amazes me. My candidate of choice was McCain, but I'm certainly not going to whine about his losing or the VP being a 'liberal rag'. Choice is a powerful thing: those that don't like what they are reading in the VP don't have to subscribe to it either. Face it: Obama won and will be America's President for the next four years. Those saying that he's not 'their President' are acting like children on a grade school playground; they need to grow up and act like the adults they are supposed to be.

It's the Economy plain and simple

What do the US recessions of 1953, 1957, 1980, 1990, and the 1973 oil crisis all have in common? The executive party in charge was not elected back into office. Why would anyone think that the current “worst economic crisis since the Great Depression” is any different?

For a race that isn’t about race people sure are making it one. The man whose father is African was elected because he wasn’t a republican, NOT because he is black. The “not-a-republican” nominee could have been Gumby and would have been reigned in as the first still action clay figure to be elected. Remember Clinton’s slogan when he defeated Bush 41 “It’s the economy stupid”??? Well it’s the economy plain and simple.

Comment

For those who are disappointed in the results of the election, you have every right to be if your candidate did not win. But can you put aside your partisanship for just a day or two and recognize the historical significance of this election? I don't agree with many of Obama's stated policies...but I'm willing to give him a chance. Heck, he's not even in office yet! Kind of hard to grade how well he'll do as president when he hasn't even taken office yet. All this name calling and hatred boils down to a reflection of you; I feel pity for those of you who feel invective, hatred, and snide remarks are the proper response. If there is one thing I have learned from this election is how many immature, negative, and hate filled people there are on BOTH sides of the isle, illustrated so well just in these postings alone. And that is profoundly sad.

so where do we go??

so where do we go to get them??? the regular stores??? i wish i would've purchased my copies earlier, but i've been pretty sick over the past few days... guess i'll have to be old fashioned and drive around.... at least gas is cheaper now :)

- Electing a president alone is not history because a president is elected every four years.-

As a matter of fact, that IS history. That is why ALL of the Presidents can be found in History books.

definition of History from m-w.com
2 a: a chronological record of significant events (as affecting a nation or institution) often including an explanation of their causes
4 b: events of the past

Please, please!

Please that's not enough copies. Print more!
