Both couples had sold their single-family homes in Virginia Beach and moved into an active-adult community in a.
Yet they missed the Beach.
"We never would've left Virginia Beach" had a senior community been available there to fit their needs, said 72-year-old Marlene Allen, a retired bookkeeper.
"We would've stayed in Virginia Beach, too," said Mary Jane Williams, who retired from civil service and Camellia Food Stores.
So the opening of Brenne-man Lakes Apartments, near the intersection of South Plaza Trail and Independence Boulevard, was welcome news for the couples.
It wasn't long before they were Beach bound again, packing their belongings to move to the new active-adult community this past summer.
Developed by Brenneman Lakes Associates, built by Marlyn Development and managed by S.L. Nusbaum Realty Co., the gated community is for those 55 and older.
"The area is nice and quiet and centrally located," manager Annette Luttrull said of the 48-unit complex. Brenneman Lakes is within minutes of Mount Trashmore Park, medical services and shopping at Lynnhaven and Pembroke malls.
The rental community features two- and three-bedroom apartments with four floor plans available.
All units include a washer and dryer, security system, space-saver microwave, large closets and fully equipped kitchens with stainless-steel appliances and cherry cabinetry. Electric fireplaces are available in some units. Elevators are in each building, and detached garages are available for rent.
Brenneman Lakes Apartments residents enjoy a resort-style pool and waterfall overlooking a fountain, fitness and business centers, and clubhouse.
All are shared with Brenneman Farm Apartments, a 304 multi-family apartment complex across the street.
The amenities are perfect for the Williamses and the Allens, who can be found enjoying fresh coffee and warm cookies in the clubhouse on any given day.
Both couples opted for the Winchester floor plan, a two-bedroom, two-bath apartment with 1,221 square feet.
"We didn't want to be bothered with any type of upkeep on a home anymore," said Marlene Allen.
Now the couples enjoy long walks around the community and relish their new lifestyle in the company of good friends.
