End of an era in Virginia Beach with Oberndorf's departure

Posted to: Elections News Politics Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH

The streetcar bell, a gift in 1997 from then-San Francisco Mayor Willie L. Brown, went into a cardboard box labeled "decor, pictures, plaques."

A white dove kite, designed by a Virginia Beach woman for the 1996 Summer Olympics, was snipped from the ceiling and packed away.

A drawing of dragons frolicking outside a house by a third-grader at Creeds Elementary named Kasey, was wrapped up with paintings from other children throughout the years.

Photos of Mayor Meyera Oberndorf - in a floral sundress and straw hat, surrounded by businessmen at her first ribbon-cutting in 1988 and of her greeting President Bill Clinton at a White House dinner - were stuffed away.

In the end, it took nearly 100 boxes to hold the mementos of Oberndorf's 20-year career as Virginia Beach's first elected and longest-serving mayor. That doesn't count the plaques and paintings that were considered city property and not the mayor's.

The city paid movers $862 to clear Oberndorf's belongings out of the mayor's office in City Hall on Tuesday. Will Sessoms, who defeated Oberndorf in the November election, will be sworn in on Monday.

"It was like being in a garden of beautiful flowers and getting to look at them and smell their fragrance for the first time," said Oberndorf, who spent the week sifting through all the gifts, plaques and photos.

The office had become Oberndorf's second home, and she rarely threw anything away. Every surface in the mayor's office, including the massive desk with the leather top that belonged to her father, was crammed with memories. A painting, a plaque, or an award hung from each slat of the wood-paneled room.

Oberndorf, for the most part, remembered who gave her every item.

The small stuffed bear in a gingham dress, she said, was a gift from a woman whose son had died of AIDS. The miniature Taj Mahal was a souvenir from an Asian Indian group in Chesapeake. The toy parrot came courtesy of a member of the mayor's youth council whose father was stationed in South America.

And what about the samurai sword? Well, Oberndorf said, that's a mystery.

She kept it all because that's what residents expected of their mayor, Oberndorf explained.

"In addition to my family, the city has literally been my family," she said. "What makes a strong city is a strong connection between the humans that live in the city."

After more than seven hours of packing, the movers hauled everything to a storage unit that Oberndorf rented.

Left behind were six chairs, three side tables, two credenzas, a coffee table, a television, a couch, and a lamp.

doesnt she have money???

So before she left she took even more of OUR money?? Why couldnt she pay to move her own clutter!!! Glad she is gone, and maybe things will change around here! If not, in four years we have a better chance getting rid of a BAD MAYOR. The good thing is we will never have 20 years of the same bull!

As per the horrible choice--

I voted for Sessoms for the simple fact that Meyera didn't run--she had NO visible campaign. I was frankly shocked when she appeared on TV acting distraught--I wondered--Where was she all of this time? I would have voted for her if she had put up ANY campaign--any signs--any attempt--sheesh...I didn't think she wanted the job!!!

Horrible choice by the voters

While I believe it was time for Meyera to move on, I am sickened by the choice made by uneducated voters. If you thought you were being robbed blind to support rich developers before, just wait! This man is not here to be a good mayor.

Fumigate the Office

Will Sessoms will need to fumigate the office before moving in.

What a deal, we get her moved out for $800. Good riddance!

BS83109

I don't know about the $450,000 rule--if that is true, it looks like less than 10% of the city is supporting the rest of us. Are other cities set up that way or is it some trait of Virginia Beach that has made things turn out that way?
What is great about this city/country, though, is that we don't get a number of votes pro-rated on the value of our homes. We all get one. That keeps us from being a feudal society all over again!
I remember that when using city services, too. Even if the person elbowing me aside in the pool or asking the librarian a question that takes ten minutes to answer right before me in line doesn't pay a penny of taxes (a renter or whatever), they get the same vote and the same basic human dignity as me.

Hey Mayor

Hows about running in the next election in Portsmouth??? We could use a mayor thatcould move our city forward and is not a racist!!!

stop crying?

It is my understanding that the comments sections is to "comment" in regards to the article itself. There is no reason people can't "cry" about Oberndorf leaving office or show their gratitude for her service. Yes, a new person has been elected and I hope that all goes quite well. However, I find it rude to simply tell her supporters to simply get over it and move on. I have yet to say that to one Republican in regards to the presidential election. Why? I have common courtesy, perhaps. Happy New Year to all!

Thank You

You have served this city well...

Mayor moving out

Can we please stop the crying over the "20 year" mayor leaving office. The people have spoken, let's move forward. She held the office a long time but starting tomorrow a new era is dawning in Virginia Beach. Let's also remember that the "office" is a public office owned by the taxpayers and is not the mayor's personal property. Anyone in public office should remember this fact, and not feel to "at home", because we still live in a free society and pick the leaders we desire.

Sounds like!

That she was dug in like an Alabama tick! And just as about useful! I'm glad to see her gone! Maybe now the oceanfront will revive from her heavy hand no fun approach that ran alot of business away! Greekfest riots were horrible and things went downhill from there. I grew up there when we could cruise the strip and both sides of the street were full of people and all the shops and restaurants were booming! Also had a first class charterboat fleet, now it's just a mere shadow of itself! hey hey goodbye! And don't let the door hit you where you sit!
