The Railroad Ditch entrance to the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, which leads to Lake Drummond, is set to reopen to auto traffic, according to refuge officials.

The area has been closed for two years due to habitat management activities and the huge wildfire which swept through the area this summer.

Free car passes are available starting Monday from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. at refuge headquarters at 3100 Desert Road. The office is open Monday through Friday and closed on federal holidays.

The pass allows auto access through the gated entrance to a six-mile gravel road which ends at Lake Drummond, one of only two natural lakes in Virginia.
