A former School Board candidate and member of a group appointed by the City Council to educate the community about drug abuse has been accused of drunken driving.
Marion H. Matthews, 76, was charged with driving under the influence and refusal to take a blood or breath test, said city spokeswoman Debbie George.
Police received a call about 6:30 p.m. Dec. 25 about a vehicle "operating in a reckless manner," George said. The vehicle was spotted on East Pinner Street.
Matthews failed a field sobriety test but declined to take a blood or breath test, George said.
A retired guidance counselor, Matthews ran for the School Board's Nansemond Borough seat this year. Her term with the city's Substance Abuse and Youth Council, a volunteer group, expires today, George said.
Matthews declined to comment.
