Former Western Branch quarterback Kevin Newsome has been selected to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl next month in San Antonio.
The all-star game features many of the nation’s top high school football players. Former players in the game include Saints running back Reggie Bush, Titans quarterback Vince Young and Vikings running back Adrian Peterson.
Newsome, 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, was one of the top quarterbacks in the state when he played at Western Branch in 2007, but he decided to transfer to Hargrave Military for his senior season. His mother, Theresa, said he since has returned to Hampton Roads to finish his high school requirements at Churchland.
“If he would have stayed at Hargrave he would have had to stay there the whole school year,” she said. “But he’ll be finished next month. Now he’ll be able to start college in January. That’s the plan if we can work it out.”
Where he’ll go hasn’t been decided. He first committed to Michigan in April but decommitted in August. His mother says her son has narrowed his choices to Virginia Tech, Penn State, Ohio State and Boston College. She said he hopes make his final choice in the next two weeks.
For now, Newsome will continue helping the girls track team as a student-assistant coach. Newsome won two state individual titles last school year, in the 55 hurdles at the state indoor meet and the 110 hurdles at the state outdoor meet.
Going to Churchland also enables Newsome to attend the same school as his younger brother, Kevon, who this week was named second-team All-Tidewater at defensive end.
