Donald Luzzatto, an editorial writer at The Virginian-Pilot for the past four years, will become the editorial page editor on Jan. 1.
He will succeed Dennis Hartig, who is retiring at the end of the month after nearly 30 years at The Pilot.
In a memo announcing the promotion on Monday, The Virginian-Pilot's publisher and president, Maurice Jones, said Luzzatto had offered "a thoughtful and measured voice" in his editorials. In 2006, Luzzatto won first place for editorial writing in the annual Virginia Press Association contest.
Luzzatto, 46, said Monday that, under his leadership, the editorial pages will remain "a safe place for conversation and debate about the larger issues in Hampton Roads." He will continue to write editorials and a weekly column.
He came to The Pilot in 2000 and served as weekend editor and Suffolk editor before joining the editorial board. Luzzatto previously worked at newspapers including Stars and Stripes in Tokyo, The Gainesville Sun in Florida and The York Dispatch in Pennsylvania.

Mary - i am calm
I realize the election is over, i realize who won, and i realize that a lot of Repubs voted for the winner. What i get a kick out of is the remaining 20% deadenders.
If you havent heard Bush's incessant claim that only history can judge him, then forget about Obvious Man, you need to meet Oblivious Man.
"I don't recall defending any since the election."
That is taking a stand. When its all but over. The clock finally runs out & the bubble breaks. The enabling/defending/chearleading finally wanes. For these break-with-Bush-at-the-very-end types, I believe there's a bit of embarrased realization on their part that the majority of Mercans could smell the shinola long before they did and its best to finally admit the obvious and smell it too.
TR, from the "water carrier"
Pls calm down. The election is over. Your candidate won. I understand that a lot of former Republicans or disenchanted Republicans voted for Mr. Obama--from the clues you give you might be one of them.
I have often said that I write my own material. I don't listen to right wing radio shows, but we sometimes happen to the same conclusions (though stated with different emphases, obviously). The president said history would judge him? Well, I hadn't heard that, but he is right. Even if he has done everything you say, that doesn't mean that every statement coming out of his mouth is incorrect. History judges *all* presidents. In fact, that could almost be regarded as a trite statement (like Mr. Obviousman in the comics would say).
I am not defending any policies here and I don't recall defending any since the election. I definitely expressed a worry about the warrantless wiretapping, as well as the seizure of laptops at the border for no cause.
MaryM
I am not "calling out military members". Please do not attempt to characterize criticisms of the admin as "military bashing", which is terribly offensive. I understand limitations on that front. I did not realize you are active military. Or is it retired military? I must have missed your wiretapping criticisms, but your stated reliance of the UCMJ as a prohibition against admin criticisms (even when posting here under an alias) appears to have morphed into full throated support of their policies. Your repeated endorsements of admin policy is NOT simply limited in scope to opinions of the admin. Instead, there's usually a good dose of "liberal dem" bashing as well... directed at those critical of the admin. Its interesting that you echo verbatim Bush's own repeated opinion that the American people should not judge the Bush presidency.... that this can only be done by historians decades removed from today. Some would see that as another example of water carrier behavior.
T.R.
No, you have missed a significant piece about me, and all military members, D or R. We can be disciplined under the UCMJ if we openly criticize a sitting president (it's not January 20 yet, is it?). Also, history tends to sort out what was outrageous, at the time, from what is outrageous in all eras. I really doubt that history will consign Mr. Bush to a worse place than it consigned Richard Nixon. Start writing your book and I will read it, along with the books of everyone else who has historical perspective or political expertise.
Do you see the subtle difference? I can criticize a policy, such as warrantless wiretaps, and I have. I cannot criticize the man himself, nor rank him in the lowest echelons of presidents ever. That is for you civilians to do right now. Pls don't call out military members because we cannot/will not do it. Isn't it nice to live in a country where you can say whatever thoughts cross your mind? We military can, too, but we have to wait for the moment sometimes.
Congrats!
Congrats Donald!!!!
All the hard work paid off!!!
I look forward to reading your view on the Newer Breed of the "intellectual" Democrats as opposed to the old school of Dem's that were a party of social whiners.
As I'm sure you've noticed the Newer D's approach each situation by asking themselves "Whats the "smartest" thing to do in this situation?" as opposed to the "Us against them" battles (on both sides) of the past.
No more of the Wild West where we try to control the world//wether through War or Hate...Hopefully now through negotiating, helping pre-emptly, making allies and not enemies...thus creating friends that want to trade with us, support us, etc. A "smarter" approach to things always pay off.
Welcome Donald, to your New Administration! HaHaHa!
MaryM - you once again wallow in the "both sides do it"....
... false equivalency that is very much not applicable with the Bush Disaster Years. You need to get past the idea that criticism of this admin is by definition "liberal", when instead its simply criticism of an inept and historical awful admin. As a McCain2000 supporter, I am ALL for calling BS on ANY party who conducts themselves like the current conspirators have. Turn the tables for a moment and imagine if several Dem admin peoples leaked the identity of an undercover CIA agent working on Iran nuke proliferation. And warrantlessly wiretapped, and implemented a interrogation policy that has resulted in the deaths of over 100 people in US custody. Your strawman argument that "i support every lib idea" is just bizarre. Whats sad about your posts is that you appear incapable of recognizing that THIS presidency has been - to use a milquetoast expression - a BAD presidency. It is you who appear to blindly support and reflexively defend the indefensible.
T.R.
Once again, we expect different things. I see myself in the midst of a liberal revolution and say that you guys *need* the loyal opposition (in the British sense). If the editorial page just becomes one more liberal tool, why will conservatives bother to buy the paper? Can you liberals support it all by yourselves? And are you so cocksure of every liberal idea that you truly don't fear the consequences of not listening to any other ideas for the next eight years? I don't recall the R's ever advocating for shutting down free speech coming from D's and . . . honestly, that would sound more like Soviet Russia than any idea currently coming out of the president-elect's mouth (my mantra for him is "Give him a chance").
Good choice
I have enjoyed Mr. L's editorials, but I have to agree with BOABABS on the "just get along" point that was made. Mr. L's many-months-old editorial measuring up the Bush/Cheney Administration (demonstrably the worstest ever presidency in modern and not-so-moderm times) was simply milquetoast. Of course it was met with reflexive howls of indignation from the remaining dead-enders as "biased" and "liberal", but it was milquetoast nonetheless. Call the scorched, burnt, bankrupt, tortured, and charred kettle black if its black. Skip the false-equivalency, i'm-reporting-from-the-middle labels when a straight-up no holds bar critique is long overdue. And may your first official action in the new position be the removal of the Rameriz cartooner. Labelling anything short of blind Bush cheerleading as unpatriotic and anti-Mercan just doesnt have that funny appeal it once had.
Replacement?
I think Don will be an excellent editor of the page, yet of course no new editor is a replacement for the former person who held the position. Each brings their own persective, and for me, Dennis grew up in the business as the leading voice for managed, quality growth at the Beach. In those days, the Beacon actually had an editorial point of view that in the absence of other city wide institutions, really helped formulate rational public policy to counter the influence of entrenched interests. Dennis cut his teeth on important policy issues related to the growth of Virginia's largest city from a collection of small towns, subdivisions, and the court house. In that regard, he lived in interesting times, and Donald will now help us to understand the need for regional growth and development and for justice and fairness in the development of public policy. I think he and his staff are up to it.
Luzzatto named Head Editor
So, I guess Dennis Hartig is not leaving after all. I mean, what difference can one expect with the naming of Donald Luzzatto to the post of Chief Editor? That 'homage' Mr. Luzzatto paid to Hartig in a recent column after Hartig's retirement was announced certainly suggested that the Hartig 'approach' was the best thing since sliced bread. Oh well, I guess it won't mean a hill of beans if the paper does continue the Hartig legacy of shrinking subscriber rolls and thus less advertising revenues, they'll just continue to slide down that path that leads to being shut down! I do wish Mr. Luzzatto well, and I am standing by ready to be impressed, IF he takes a different approach with the Editorial page and allows for some opinions on local matters that are contrary to the uber-leftist ones we are so accustomed to from the present Editorial Board. Time will tell!
