Osric Robinson, a junior linebacker on the Old Dominion football team, was killed late Friday night in an automobile accident near his home in Alma, Ga., the university announced Saturday.

Robinson, who transferred to ODU this fall after playing two years at Ferrum College, earned a spot on the team following the Sept. 11 tryouts. He was a four-year letterman at Bacon County High School in Georgia, lettering in football, basketball and track.

"The Old Dominion football family and University are deeply saddened by the loss of Osric Robinson," coach Bobby Wilder said in a statement released by the university. "He was an outstanding young man who transferred to ODU and had fulfilled his dream of making our first football team. His loss will be felt by all of his teammates and our thoughts and prayers go out to his parents and family members."

As a high school player, Robinson earned first-team all- area and all-region honors as a defensive back. He caught 30 passes for 500 yards his senior year.

At Ferrum College, Robinson recorded 30 tackles at the linebacker position along with two interceptions and a fumble recovery.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
