Official says Charter still hopes for deal with WVEC-TV

SUFFOLK

An official from Charter Communications said he hopes to avoid losing WVEC-TV, Channel 13, for viewers by striking a deal before a Dec. 31 deadline.

"It may even be an eleventh- hour deal, if possible," said Anthony Pope, vice president and general manager of operations for Charter, which operates in several Hampton Roads communities.

WVEC-TV announced Monday that failed negotiations between the two parties meant the cable provider would no longer carry the ABC affiliate beginning Jan. 1.

Pope said Tuesday that it would be WVEC that requests Charter to terminate the feed if no deal is reached. He said network affiliates are increasingly taking such action to charge pay-TV providers for their content, which is still free over the airwaves.

"This is beginning to become, unfortunately, the norm, more so than an unusual situation," Pope said.

Charter currently does not pay WVEC. The station wants about a penny a month per subscriber, said Paul Fry, vice president of investor relations and corporate communications for WVEC parent company Belo Corp.

Fry said Belo deals with 13 million satellite and cable TV subscribers across the country, and it has successfully negotiated deals with all of its many other carriers.

"We receive a payment from all other providers as well, so this is not unusual," he said of the request.

Impasses happen occasionally, but the disagreements are usually resolved before they disrupt service, Fry said.

Charter's Pope said his cable company is willing to pay something. "Now we've got to determine what it is," he said.

Suffolk viewers would be the biggest losers in a protracted dispute between the companies. Pope said most of Charter's Hampton Roads customers - about 27,000 - are in Suffolk, where Charter is the only cable provider.

Charter also serves several thousand people in Franklin, the Eastern Shore and the Outer Banks.

Wow

First you call me on the phone with "great deals" every 2 hours, now you are posting ads for direct tv in a forum. You people must be desperate...

Charter

Yeah, who cares about the customer...not Charter.

How to get a deal

If you want them to get a deal, just don't print anything about it. That will eliminate the public opinion PR game, and they'll have no other choice but to just get it done.

Posturing

Both sides are posturing. Charter's trying to keep their expenses in check & of coure Channel 13 wants more money. Satellite is what I have & would not trade it for cable. Too expensive!

Media Hype!

Although the renewal of the contract between Charter Cable and WVEC-TV is a usual process in the Cable Franchise Agreement. This is no more then "Media Hype" to get the general public worked up to view WVEC-TV more than the other networks. Plus this is to make Charter Cable look like the good guys, so the City of Suffolk will not ask any questions for their renewal of the Cable Franchise Agreement. The two parties will agree at the llth hour and both will look good to the general public.
Like Cox, Charter Cable is probably planning an increase in their cable fees, and all in the name of High Definition. "WAKE-UP SUFFOLK and see how the media is manulipating you!"

Suffolk viewers win

Why is is that Suffolk gets all the benefits?

Suffolk had their chance to

Suffolk had their chance to get rid of Charter, but for some reason they didn't. Does anyone know the details of the deal? I know the council said that charter had to clean up their act and roll out modern services, but beyond that?

Just Say No To Cable....

Who cares if WVEC remains on Charter's broadcasting. Cable stinks anyway. Besides they are always increasing their rates. Satellite TV has a much better picture and it is all digital. Furthermore, I believe Directv has only had one small rate increase during the time that I have had them. Do yourself a favor and save some money as well. Switch over to Directv. I have been a customer for about 5 years now and I will never go back to cable!

No more...

Regina "Marbles In My Mouth" Mobley? My goodness, what are we to do?
