Police officer recovering after being hit with shotgun pellets

PORTSMOUTH

A police officer was recovering at home Sunday after being hit in the head by shotgun pellets during an early morning standoff in Cavalier Manor, police said.

The officer, whose name was not released, was treated and released from Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

He has been with the department for nearly three years, according to spokeswoman Detective Jan Westerbeck.

The other officer initially involved in the standoff wasn’t hurt, Westerbeck said. It was unclear how many shots were fired.

Police received a call about an armed man in the 500 block of Eisenhower Circle at 12:55 a.m., Westerbeck said. When officers arrived, they encountered an armed man outside a home.

Officers ordered the man to put down the gun, but he fired and struck one of them, Westerbeck said. Police fired back but didn’t hit the man.

The man went inside the home, according to Westerbeck. When more police arrived, they ordered the man to come out of the house. The man eventually put the gun down and surrendered to police.

Police have charged Bobbitt Jermal Gladney, 21, of the 500 block of Taft Drive, with attempted capital murder and using a gun during a felony, according to Westerbeck. Gladney is being held in jail.

The shooting is under investigation, Westerbeck said.
