A 7-month-old baby died today after being ejected from a car that ran off Holland Road and hit a tree early this morning.
The preliminary investigation indicates the boy's father fell asleep while driving, said Suffolk city spokeswoman Debbie George.
The baby died at Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk. His mother, 23, was a passenger in the car and was in critical condition at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, George said.
Police have not released the identities of the baby and his parents, but investigators believe the family is from out of state, a news release said.
The vehicle was traveling east on Holland Road at about 7 a.m. today when it ran off the road and struck the tree, police say. It landed in a ravine.
The baby was in a child seat, but was ejected from the vehicle, George said.
The eastbound portion of the 4300 block of Holland Road was closed this morning following the crash, but has re-opened.
