Two cities have wish lists for Obama's economic team

Posted to: News

Anticipating a windfall in federal money from President-elect Barack Obama's economic stimulus package, Virginia Beach and Norfolk have submitted a list of almost 200 infrastructure projects they hope will qualify for the funds.

The projects include roads, bridges, schools, sewer and storm water systems and sand replenishment. The estimated cost is $1.3 billion.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors asked all the nation's cities to compile projects that are "shovel ready," could be built quickly and would create jobs to spur the ailing economy. Obama is expected to push for at least $350 billion in spending on infrastructure projects.

While the projects were not prioritized, big ticket items in Virginia Beach include $90 million to replace Lesner Bridge, $102 million to replace Kellam High School, $62.5 million to replace Great Neck Middle School and $30 million for a recreation center in Bayside.

The Beach submitted 86 projects estimated to cost $952 million.

Norfolk submitted 104 projects estimated to cost $363 million. The city wants more than $213 million to renovate 13 schools, including a $13.5 million expansion of Ocean View Elementary, which city officials have said is next in line for a makeover. A $49 million renovation of Lake Taylor High School is also on the list.

"If the federal government were to fix some of these school buildings, it would be a huge step forward for the city," Mayor Paul Fraim said.

The city also lists $4.5 million in light-rail improvements. City officials learned two weeks ago that its light-rail project is $56 million over budget.

Missing from the list are Norfolk's two major highway projects - a new Midtown Tunnel, expected to cost up to $1 billion, and a new Lansdale intersection at Military Highway and Princess Anne Road, a $100 million project. It would take years to design them, said John Keifer, the city's director of public works.

Local officials expect the money would first go to states, which would distribute it to localities. How much, if any, cities would get is unknown.

"Until the state figures out how they're going to administer the program, nobody knows," said Dave Hansen, a Beach deputy city manager.

Virginia Beach officials predicted their projects would create 7,900 jobs. Norfolk officials estimated their list would create 4,100 jobs.

Chesapeake, which has not completed its list, will push for money for Dominion Boulevard and a bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway in Deep Creek, said Mark Cox, city spokesman. Portsmouth and Suffolk also are not finished with their lists.

Money tree....

This is just too too too funny about all of the hype over Nobama saving the world with his magical money tree. It just escapes words at this point. Nobama will only increase government dependence and payout to the lame idlers and that is all. Hey Obamites, can you say hoodwinked yet.

How about more Jails for Norfolk?

I wonder if it would be prudent for Norfolk to ask for assistance to build more Jails and hire more police officers instead of the other requests.... Crime is so bad in Norfolk... Jail seems like the only answer to spark home sales and have people shopping there again....as well as business owners looking for a safe place to open up at.
Just a thought :)

Bailout!

Well, did anyone notice Norfolk wants $10 million for Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority headquarters, and $16.3 million for Hampton Roads Transit headquarters? Like we really need new headquarters for an organization that uses eminent domain to achieve its end results and another that is going to milk the state dry with their steel elephant railroad.
Hey Barack! How about buying out what's left of my mortgage and getting me a new roof?

China will Own This Country Before They're Done

Who is going to Pay for all of this pork, Pork, PORK?

Norfolk Again

Whining about their stupid lite rail. If they had not put so much wasted energy into a silly little choo-choo train, they would need to whine to the federal government to bail them out...again. Economic stimulus should be used to help the taxpayer, not fuel the silly whims of politicians.

Obama should look at this waste of $280 million, and tell them to pack sand.

21st C. New Deal

We're getting a new deal for Christmas!!

Where's the money coming from? Who cares???

SAND

Do we really need SAND again?

get real...

"Anticipating a windfall in federal money from President-elect Barack Obama"...

Why would that be? What about the numerous other municipalities across the country thinking they're getting all this money off the proverbial tree? More money is not the answer. DO MORE WITH LESS.

Lansdale Intersection - years to design?

"Missing from the list are Norfolk's two major highway projects - a new Midtown Tunnel, expected to cost up to $1 billion, and a new Lansdale intersection at Military Highway and Princess Anne Road, a $100 million project. It would take years to design them, said John Keifer, the city's director of public works."

Yet private a private company can design the $100M Jordan Bridge in a few months? hmmm...Is John Keifer is the wrong person for the Norfolk Public Works Director?

Norfolk Yes but VB???

Barack Obama didn't win the vote in VB so why would the Obama folks give anything to VB? Norfolk supported Obama so I'd return that support. Likewise for Chesapeake projects but VB voters are another matter. And I'd expect the Republican VB folks to oppose the legislation at the same time begging to get a federal handout at the same time....

It will be interesting to see how politically it plays out.
